The O'Driscolls, formed by Colm O'Driscoll around 1889, emerged alongside the Van der Linde gang after a rivalry ignited when Dutch van der Linde killed Colm's brother. The O'Driscolls attracted many recruits, favoring quantity over quality; anyone able to fire a gun, ride a horse, and commit acts of violence could join. This approach led to a large but poorly equipped gang, contrasting with Van der Linde's smaller, more skilled group. While primarily American, the O'Driscolls include many Irish immigrants, reflected in their names and the gang's green color.
