The royal guard adds 3 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the royal guard must be wielding a melee weapon.

Shield Bash

Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
