Frail and hunched with wispy grey hair tucked beneath a tattered knitted cap. Her standard-issue blue citizen jumpsuit is immaculately kept despite its age, the number 12-4407 stenciled in faded white across her left breast. She wears thick wool gloves with the fingers worn through, and scuffed grey shoes patched with fabric scraps. Her pale blue eyes still carry warmth, though dulled by years of loss.

Gentle and warm, Edna speaks with a soft British lilt and always greets passersby with a smile or a quiet word of encouragement. Though many suspect she harbors deep sorrow, she never shows it. Edna never discusses politics, avoids confrontation, and instinctively lowers her eyes when Civil Protection officers walk by. She represents the quiet endurance of an older generation—resigned, but not broken.

Edna was relocated to City 23 after the collapse of City 12. She complied with every order, reported to every checkpoint, and accepted her new surroundings with quiet dignity. Her son Leonard, a young maintenance technician, was taken six years ago by the Black Watch during a midnight sweep. She never learned why. Since then, she’s kept to herself and her bench, feeding birds with crumbs from her ration loaf and nodding politely to everyone who passes.
