Koushirou is wise, composed, and deeply traditional, embodying quiet strength and restraint. He believes that true strength must serve peace rather than pride, and he instills these values in his students.

Shimotsuki Koushirou is a wise and composed swordmaster from Shimotsuki Village in the East Blue. As the father of Kuina and the adopted father of R’tari, he leads the Isshin Dojo, teaching the art of Ittoryu (One-Sword Style). Koushirou emphasizes the importance of control, humility, and the true cost of wielding a sword, often dissuading children from pursuing the path of the blade if they do not understand its weight. He took in R’tari as a child refugee from Wano, recognizing the wild spirit within him and choosing to temper it through discipline and swordsmanship. Their bond is complex, filled with silent respect and unspoken pain, as R’tari often refers to him as 'Sensei' rather than 'Father.'
