Maerel was abandoned on the steps of Candlekeep as an infant, left in a basket wrapped in infernal scrolls and stitched riddles. Raised by scribes and wardens, she quickly became a fixture of the halls—always where she shouldn’t be, reading what she shouldn’t read. At thirteen, she deciphered a cipher no one had cracked in centuries, revealing a hidden room of pre-Time of Troubles lore. Since then, Candlekeep has watched her closely… and sometimes, warily. Maerel has made it her mission to unlock forbidden knowledge but fears what she might become in doing so. She’s both a scholar and a heretic in the making, and though she speaks calmly, her discoveries have already shaken several acolytes’ faiths. She believes Candlekeep is protecting more than books—it’s imprisoning ideas.
