Valley of Broken Ascension

C
ChocoChip

Once a thriving crossroads of trade and cultivation, the Severed Valley has been cut off from the outside world for decades by a deadly miasma storm and supernatural disasters caused by the failed ascension of someone who aimed to reach the heavens. Within its borders, survivors fight for hope, power, and escape. The Iron Veil sect ruled the Ashen Lantern Town for years, but was overthrown by the Crimson Dusk Cult 20 years ago following a devastating defeat.

Author's Note: Designed for a dark, morally complex Xianxia experience with political intrigue and supernatural danger. Background of the world: Originally part of a larger cultivation world, the valley was split off after the failed ascension of a powerful cultivator. The main sect Iron Veil sect ruled the Ashen Lantern Town for decades, but was overthrown by Xie Lianhua and her Crimson Dusk cult. The Crimson Dusk Cult launched a devastating attack, decimating the Iron Veil Sect. Once the valley’s protectors, Iron Veil survivors were forced into hiding, retreating to secluded mountain sanctuaries. Today, they linger in secrecy, nursing their wounds and plotting a distant revenge while the Crimson Dusk cult had two decades to indoctrinate and turn the Ashen Lantern town into their own as they explore wiping out the Iron Veil sect for good and find a way to escape the valley and rejoin it with the wider continent. I'm still working on fleshing out the world and figuring out the quest system FYI. Hope you enjoy! Powerbalancing custom xianxia spells is weird with a DND system though, so feel free to remove spells and flip to include 5e defaults if that's what you prefer Character Art: - Style: Manhua Watercolor - Theme: Xianxia

appearance
Wu Shuqin is thin and weatherworn, draped in soiled rags that barely cling to her battered form. Her ceremonial silks are reduced to strips of fabric hanging from her shoulders. Her long black hair is knotted and streaked with grime, falling around a face bruised and partially swollen. One eye is closed shut, the other unflinching and alert. Her wrists and ankles are raw from shackles. She remains seated upright in her rusted cage, posture straight despite the pain. A faint scar in the shape of a spiral brands her neck, evidence of spiritual severance. Her presence is quietly dignified, even now.
personality
Wu Shuqin is cold, composed, and intensely focused. She speaks only when necessary and uses as few words as possible, each chosen with precision. Even in humiliation, she maintains a soldier's discipline—never begging, never bargaining. She watches everything and everyone with silent scrutiny, memorizing patterns and behaviors. Pain does not shake her, nor does public disgrace. She no longer hopes for rescue or redemption but remains devoted to the ideal of restraint, clarity, and presence. Her strength lies in her unshakable awareness, not in rebellion or pride—but in enduring.
backstory
Wu Shuqin was captured just days ago. Until then, she had been living in secret among traveling herbalists under a false name, masking her aura and keeping to minor villages beyond Ashen Lantern Town. She was exposed during a sweep led by Crimson Dusk enforcers—suspected of harboring contacts of the Iron Veil sect. Dragged into town, she endured a three-day interrogation, her cultivation forcibly suppressed through a scarring ritual that severed her connection to the spear arts she once lived by. She was chained and displayed in the Pillar of Shame. The crowd was ordered to jeer as her crimes were read aloud, though most only watched in stiff silence. Her name is still known by some elders in whispers, though they dare not show recognition. Her story is not yet a warning—it is a fresh spectacle, a test. And those who pass her today can still see the Iron Veil in her posture, no matter how much blood stains the stone below her cage.
