Description

Tucked away behind a façade of quiet wealth near the Athkatlan docks, the House of the Harpers is a discreet yet fortified townhouse that serves as a regional outpost for the clandestine organization. Officially listed as a music conservatory and gathering hall for retired bards, it is in truth a hub of intelligence-gathering, resistance planning, and arcane surveillance. Stone-lined vaults beneath the structure hold caches of magical items and records dating back to the Time of Troubles, while upper chambers host encoded meetings and sendings from across Amn and Tethyr. Operatives posing as performers, stewards, or dockworkers rotate in and out frequently, and few outside the inner circle ever realize its true importance. The house also occasionally shelters refugees, endangered sages, and wayward adventurers entangled in causes too noble for Athkatla’s brutal economy.

Appearance

From the street, the house presents as a well-maintained but modest villa with ivy-laced stone walls, pale wooden shutters, and a modest slate roof. A small stage is visible through arched front windows, and the air often carries faint music—harp, lute, or flute—performed by seemingly idle residents. Within, the rooms are clean and book-lined, lit by soft everburning lanterns and framed with polished wood and aged velvet drapes. Secret stairwells wind behind paneling, and enchanted glyphs rest dormant beneath rugs or around doorframes, ready to trigger in defense. An aura of calm civility clings to the space, but beneath the surface, vigilance hums like a drawn bowstring.
