Aethelgard

Aethelgard is a world woven from the remnants of a shattered moon. Magic bleeds into the land.

Author's Note: Civilizations cling to life in the more stable regions, wary of the wild magic that reshapes the landscape and twists creatures into bizarre forms. The shattered moon, known as the shards of Aethel, hang visibly in the sky, a constant reminder of catacylsm and a source of both wonder and fear. This world is a work in Progress

Description

Devouring Thorns are driven by a relentless hunger. They are not intelligent, acting more like a colony of insects than individual creatures. They are attracted to warmth and movement, and once they sense prey, they become a whirlwind of thorny aggression. They communicate with each other through subtle rustling and clicking sounds, coordinating their attacks to overwhelm their target. While individually weak, their numbers make them a dangerous threat to even larger creatures. Devouring Thorns often lie in wait, concealed among other vegetation. They prefer to ambush their prey, swarming over them and quickly restraining them with their thorny vines. They are relentless in their attacks, continuing to drain the life from their victim until nothing remains. They are easily distracted by other potential prey, however, and may abandon a larger, stronger target if a smaller, easier meal presents itself.

Multiattack

The swarm makes two attacks with its thorny vines.

Thorny Vines

Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 0 ft. (swarm's reach), one target in the swarm's space. Hit: 7 (2d6) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or become restrained by the vines. A creature can use its action to attempt to free itself or another creature within reach of the vines, doing so with a successful DC 11 Strength (Athletics) check. The vines are destroyed after dealing the damage from the attack.
