Zhang Jiao was a self-proclaimed Taoist mystic and healer who claimed to have received divine revelations. He founded the Way of Peace, a Taoist sect that gained a large following among the impoverished peasantry, preaching a message of equality and social change. In 184 CE, he launched the Yellow Turban Rebellion, a massive uprising that threatened the Han Dynasty.
