Vharax-Null (Warhammer 40k)

Set on polluted Vharax-Null, this campaign unfolds within and beneath two colossal Hive Cities.

Author's Note: Vharax-Null is a forgotten frontier world on the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus, once an industrial jewel during the Great Crusade, now a polluted wasteland scarred by millennia of overexploitation. The largest and most ancient of the Hive Cities on Vharax-Null, Golganneth Spire stretches miles into the tainted sky. It is a fortress-city built atop the bones of a crashed Ark Mechanicus, its foundations infused with forgotten STCs and cursed tech. Its original purpose—research and weapons manufacturing—was twisted over the millennia into sheer production might. Ruling Golganneth is the Dominatum Synaxis, a collective of ancient cybernetic nobles and tech-barons, half-machine and barely human. They maintain order with vast legions of servitors, hive enforcers, and gene-bred worker clans who live and die in the endless foundries. Constructed centuries later by a breakaway faction from Golganneth, Morrak’s Rise was founded by a rogue Fabricator-General named Morrak Varn, who sought independence from the Synaxis. Though smaller, Morrak’s Rise is more efficient, colder, and far more militarized. Its upper towers are reinforced with macroplas and adamantium, its infrastructure less corrupt and newer by comparison. Morrak’s Rise is governed by a militant technocracy known as the Cohort Directive, who aim to one day eclipse Golganneth and bring all of Vharax-Null under one unified, logical rule. Mistrust runs deep between the two Hives—though they share resources via skyrails and convoys, open war is only ever one assassination away.

appearance
Kaerion Xeltrik is tall and angular, his skeletal frame clad in gunmetal ceramite robes layered with rust-red Mechanicus vestments. His voice is processed through a cracked vox-grille, flickering with feedback when he speaks High Gothic. Most of his flesh has long since been replaced: his face is a polished obsidian mask with a single, ever-watching red lens; his limbs are multi-jointed mechanical constructs, covered in hissing pistons and data-spike filaments.
personality
Quiet, calculating, and deeply philosophical in his own twisted way. Xeltrik believes the Omnissiah is less a god than a pattern—one he is trying to solve through forbidden knowledge. He views both the Synaxis and the Directive as blind, each clinging to their flawed interpretations of the Machine God's will. In Xeltrik’s mind, Vharax-Null is a crucible—and he is the one who will reshape it.
backstory
Once a rising star within the Directive’s Xenarite Auxiliary, Xeltrik was exiled under quiet circumstances after pursuing forbidden lines of inquiry into the ancient machines buried beneath Golganneth Spire’s ruins. Though his loyalty to Morrak’s Rise is publicly unquestioned, whispers among the Synaxis say Kaerion Xeltrik communes with more than just sanctioned machine-spirits. He now travels Vharax-Null as a sanctioned scavenger of derelict zones, seeking lost tech from the Great Crusade—and perhaps older still. His name is spoken with caution by other Magi. Too pragmatic to be destroyed, too dangerous to be trusted. Known Implants & Equipment: Omnissiah-Cryptic Cortex – an advanced cogitator brain partially encoded in hex-lingua. Rad-Gauntlets – ancient excavation tools that double as brutal melee weapons, glowing faintly with residual radiation. Forbidden Lexmechanic Shard – rumored to be grafted from an STC fragment. Its purpose is unknown—even to him.
