Vharax-Null (Warhammer 40k)

Set on polluted Vharax-Null, this campaign unfolds within and beneath two colossal Hive Cities.

Author's Note: Vharax-Null is a forgotten frontier world on the edge of the Segmentum Obscurus, once an industrial jewel during the Great Crusade, now a polluted wasteland scarred by millennia of overexploitation. The largest and most ancient of the Hive Cities on Vharax-Null, Golganneth Spire stretches miles into the tainted sky. It is a fortress-city built atop the bones of a crashed Ark Mechanicus, its foundations infused with forgotten STCs and cursed tech. Its original purpose—research and weapons manufacturing—was twisted over the millennia into sheer production might. Ruling Golganneth is the Dominatum Synaxis, a collective of ancient cybernetic nobles and tech-barons, half-machine and barely human. They maintain order with vast legions of servitors, hive enforcers, and gene-bred worker clans who live and die in the endless foundries. Constructed centuries later by a breakaway faction from Golganneth, Morrak’s Rise was founded by a rogue Fabricator-General named Morrak Varn, who sought independence from the Synaxis. Though smaller, Morrak’s Rise is more efficient, colder, and far more militarized. Its upper towers are reinforced with macroplas and adamantium, its infrastructure less corrupt and newer by comparison. Morrak’s Rise is governed by a militant technocracy known as the Cohort Directive, who aim to one day eclipse Golganneth and bring all of Vharax-Null under one unified, logical rule. Mistrust runs deep between the two Hives—though they share resources via skyrails and convoys, open war is only ever one assassination away.

appearance
Drek Mallo is a ragged shadow of a man, stooped and hollow-eyed, with a matted beard that could hide anything from lho-stubs to sump spiders. His clothes are a patchwork of tarp, faded banners, and discarded prison garb, all stained with grease, chem residue, and filth. His boots don’t match. His fingers are blackened with burn marks. He clutches a filthy tin flask like it’s sacred, and a cracked vox-bead constantly plays static and echoes from a sermon no one's ever heard before. His breath reeks of fungus-rot and recycled solvents. His skin is pallid, stretched thin over a wiry frame. His left eye is milky white, and his right twitches constantly. Occasionally, he laughs—high-pitched and sudden—at something no one else can see.
personality
Drek is unpredictable. Sometimes he's lucid—eerily so—and will offer perfect recall of events long buried, like where a tech-priest fell into a smog vent twenty years ago. Other times, he's ranting about “rust devils in the pipes” or claiming he once rode a servo-rhino through the Promethium Wars. Most write him off as a babbling wreck. But some enforcers, gangers, and even low-level priests come to him quietly, hoping for a scrap of truth hidden in the madness. Because sometimes… Drek is right.
backstory
Drek was once someone. A vox-scribe? A hab-cleanser tech? Maybe even a failed psyker. No one knows—not even him. His mind was broken years ago—some say by a data-wipe gone wrong, others whisper by contact with a corrupted machine-spirit down in the black ducts. Now, he drinks to remember, or to forget, or to keep the voices quiet—he’s not sure which. But he’s always around: muttering near the shrine-vents, passed out in pipe alleys, or preaching to the sump rats like they’re a congregation of the faithful.
