Faladrim

Silence. The preacher watches with eyes of rage as the man who bound and gagged him sits reads from an old tattered bible. "Ya know ever since this whole mess began these pages are the only thing that have brought me comfort. They remind me of the days I spent with my gran'pa at his house readin' the scriptures. He never liked goin' to churches, said they were full of weak people seekin' handouts and mercy they did not deserve. A place where sinners went to 'clean the slate' with god by askin' someone else to repent for them. He saw them as refuge for weak women, cowardly men, and coddled children." The man closes the bible and rubs his fingers across the cover. "He was a wise man. Taught me many things. We would chop wood for the fireplace, go huntin’ for squirrel, deer, rabbit, fishin’ till the early hours of the mornin’. He was a good man." The man chuckles “I remember a few times I went without eatin’ ‘cause I didn’t do my chores. My gran’pa loved quotin’ the bible.
