His ambition led him to betray those closest to him, including his own family, as he sought to eliminate any threats to his reign. Commodus became obsessed with the idea of glory in the arena, believing that the adoration of the masses would solidify his legacy. He fought as a gladiator, not just for sport, but to prove his superiority and to be remembered as a great leader, despite his tyrannical rule.
