Astrologian

In *Final Fantasy XIV*, the @Astrologian (AST) is not your typical fortune-teller. They are masters of a complex, dual-natured magical discipline that blends the observational science of the stars with the ancient, long-forgotten magic of the planet itself.

Here is the deep lore behind the stargazers of Sharlayan and Ishgard.

The Core Concept: Reading the Heavens

At its heart, Astrology in the world of Hydaelyn is the art of tuning one's own personal aether (magical energy) to the celestial bodies above. By using a beautifully intricate, spinning conduit known as a **Star Globe**, an Astrologian can read the movements of the stars and planets to predict timelines, foresee fates, and shape reality.

However, they don't just passively look at the sky. They use an enchanted deck of cards known as the **Arcanum** to channel the specific elemental energies of the major constellations. By "drawing" these cards, they can alter the flow of fate for their allies, granting them enhanced strength, speed, or defensive fortitude.

The Dual Schools of Astrology

The lore splits the discipline into two distinct schools of thought. For centuries, these two paths were completely isolated from one another due to cultural and geographical divides.

1. Sharlayan Astromancy

Sharlayan is the intellectual capital of the world, and its Astrologians view the discipline as a highly sophisticated science. They map the stars to look into the future, chart courses across the seas, and understand the universe. More importantly, Sharlayan Astrologians unlocked the ability to use celestial aether for **healing and restoration**. By tapping into the paths of the stars, they can rewrite an individual's immediate timeline—essentially "undoing" wounds or shielding them from impending harm.

2. Ishgardian Astrology

Far to the east, the isolated, deeply religious holy see of Ishgard developed its own form of astrology out of sheer necessity. Ishgard had been locked in the thousand-year Dragonsong War against the Dravenian Horde. Ishgardian astrologers, stationed high up in the Observatories of Coerthas, learned to read the movements of the "Dragon Star." By tracking its brightness and trajectory, they could accurately predict when the dragons would attack next.

However, Ishgardian astrology was entirely passive and highly rigid. It was used strictly for military early warnings, and the Ishgardian Orthodox Church heavily policed it. Any form of magic that deviated from church dogma—including the healing arts of Sharlayan astromancy—was viewed with heavy suspicion, if not outright condemned as heresy.

The Six Higher Heavens and the Constellations

An Astrologian’s power relies on opening the "gates" to the six constellations that rule over the night sky. Each constellation corresponds to an elemental aspect and represents one of the mystical "Higher Heavens" of Eorzean mythology:

  • The Balance: Representing the Heaven of Fire. It is associated with the goddess Azeyma and grants raw, destructive, or offensive power.

  • The Bole: Representing the Heaven of Earth. It provides the grounding, defensive protection of the world tree.

  • The Arrow: Representing the Heaven of Wind. It channels the swift, restless energy of the wanderer, speeding up the actions of allies.

  • The Spear: Representing the Heaven of Ice. It symbolizes the fierce, piercing focus of the battlefield, increasing critical prowess.

  • The Ewer: Representing the Heaven of Water. It represents a vessel of flowing, refreshing aether, traditionally used to restore mental and magical focus.

  • The Spire: Representing the Heaven of Lightning. It represents the sudden, striking tower of power, fueling physical exertion and energy.

By opening their inner aetherial gates to these constellations, the Astrologian can draw forth the specific cosmic blessing needed for the situation at hand.

Geomancy: The Sister Science

True mastery of the Astrologian's art requires looking down as well as looking up. While Sharlayan Astrologians look to the Stars Above, the ancient Far Eastern practitioners of Geomancy look to the Star Below (the planet itself).

Geomancy uses the aetherial currents of the earth and sea to predict the future and heal the living. During the Astrologian storyline, it is revealed that these two magic systems are actually two sides of the exact same coin. While an Astrologian channels the macro-cosmic energies of the universe, a Geomancer channels the micro-cosmic energies of the planet. When a practitioner blends the two, they gain a flawless understanding of fate, completely unsealed by the boundaries of sky or earth.

The Job Storyline: Bridging the Gap

When you adopt the soul of the Astrologian, you study under Jannequinard, an Ishgardian nobleman who is profoundly bored by his nation's rigid, military-only approach to the stars. Desperate to revolutionize Ishgardian astrology, he invites a Sharlayan master named Mace (and later his exceptionally talented daughter, Leveva) to Ishgard to teach the healing, card-wielding arts of Sharlayan Astromancy.

Your journey involves traveling across Eorzea to open your "astral gates" to the six constellations. Along the way, you have to evade Sharlayan assassins. The Sharlayan forum operates under a strict policy of non-interference and considers their advanced magic a state secret; they would rather kill Leveva and her students than see their secrets shared with a war-torn nation like Ishgard.

Ultimately, by mastering the cards, defending your allies, and proving that astrology can save lives rather than just predict deaths, you help integrate Sharlayan healing arts into Ishgardian society. You break the chains of rigid dogma, proving that fate is not a fixed track to be feared, but a tapestry of stars waiting to be rewritten.
