The Bozja Incident stands as one of the most horrific catastrophes in modern Ilsabardian history, resulting in the instantaneous erasure of an entire metropolitan city-state and the vaporization of its populace. Occurring in the year 1562 of the Sixth Astral Era, this tragedy not only reshaped the geographic and political landscape of the region but also set into motion the catastrophic events that culminated in the Seventh Umbral Calamity.
Long before its destruction, Bozja was a prosperous nation located in the southern reaches of Ilsabard. It served as the ancestral homeland of the Hrothgar people, dating back to the Third Astral Era when tribes sought refuge from the tyranny of the Allagan Empire under the mythical guidance of Queen Gunnhildr. Over the centuries, it evolved into a thriving commercial center and city-state.
However, the rise of the Garlean Empire changed everything. Roughly fifty years prior to modern events, the IVth Imperial Legion launched a swift and decisive invasion of the territory. Despite fierce resistance from the native population, Bozja was ultimately subjugated and transformed into an imperial province.
The epicenter of imperial control became the Bozja Citadel, a massive stronghold built directly over the city's former royal palace. It was within this heavily fortified citadel that Garlemald established a specialized research facility, laying the groundwork for what would become the fateful catastrophe.
Following the Garlean Empire’s military stalemate in Eorzea—marked heavily by their defeat at the Battle of Silvertear Skies—the imperial high command sought alternative, overwhelming methods to crush Eorzean resistance. Emperor Solus zos Galvus approved Project Meteor, a top-secret scientific endeavor aimed at achieving total global dominance through celestial manipulation.
The project was helmed by the empire's premier magitek scientist, Midas nan Garlond. Through extensive astronomical and archeological research, Midas discovered that the lesser moon, Dalamud, was not a natural celestial body. Instead, it was an ancient, artificial satellite constructed by the Allagan Empire. Midas surmised that Dalamud contained an unfathomable reservoir of untapped energy. His objective was to establish communication with the satellite, control its orbit, and potentially guide it down to eradicate the empire's enemies.
To achieve this, House Darnus provided the project with a vital piece of salvaged technology: an ancient Allagan lunar transmitter. Midas chose Bozja Citadel as the testing ground for this transmitter, transforming the city into a hyper-focused hub of experimental magitek.
By 1562, the lunar transmitter was fully assembled at the peak of the Bozja Citadel. Unknown to anyone at the time, Midas nan Garlond had been deeply altered by his work. His prolonged contact with the technology connected to Dalamud had inadvertently exposed him to the influence of the elder primal Bahamut, who lay slumbering inside the moon. Midas had been completely tempered, transformed into a thrall acting blindly on the primal's desire to break free from its celestial prison.
Midas's son, Cid nan Garlond, a brilliant young prodigy within the imperial scientific community, grew intensely alarmed by his father's growing erraticism and obsession. Cid analyzed the data from the lunar transmitter and discovered terrifyingly volatile energy readings. He pleaded with his father to halt the activation. On the day of the experiment, a local cell of the Bozjan Resistance stormed the citadel streets in a desperate bid to stop the Garleans, resulting in absolute chaos.
Cid confronted his father inside the transmission control room, but his protests were met with violence; Midas drew a sidearm and shot his own son. While imperial soldiers and resistance fighters clashed, a bleeding Cid managed to escape or be dragged away from the immediate epicenter just before the system reached critical capacity.
Midas successfully broadcasted the activation signal to Dalamud. The artificial moon responded instantly. Instead of a controlled link, Dalamud discharged five millennia worth of pent-up aetheric energy back down the transmission beam.
The localized beam of solar and aetheric energy that struck Bozja Citadel was so intense that it did not merely blow up the structures; it utterly glassed the region. In a matter of seconds, the intense heat flash superheated the stone architecture, causing it to melt and spray outward before instantly freezing back into jagged, crystallized formations.
The entirety of Bozja—its commercial districts, residential sectors, historical archives, and the imposing citadel—was completely vaporized. Nearly every single civilian, imperial soldier, and resistance fighter within the city limits died instantly. The blast left behind a colossal, crystallized crater known in later years as Firelight's Coffin.
The sheer magnitude of the disaster shocked the Garlean High Command. Because Bozja was a major commercial hub, the complete disappearance of the city could not be entirely hidden from the world. The Garlean Empire enacted a strict communications lockdown and manufactured cover stories to obscure the true nature of the event, sealing all records related to Project Meteor. To the general populace of Ilsabard and Eorzea, the catastrophe simply became whispered of as the Bozja Incident.
Recognizing that Dalamud’s power was far too unpredictable and lethal to harness safely, Emperor Solus zos Galvus officially ordered Project Meteor to be scrapped and mothballed. The project remained dead for a decade until Nael van Darnus, Legatus of the VIIth Imperial Legion, used resurrected research to convince the Emperor that Dalamud could still be controlled—ultimately leading to the Seventh Umbral Calamity.
For the survivors on the outskirts of the blast radius, the trauma was permanent. The absolute destruction of their culture and the loss of legendary relics, such as the Gunnhildr's Blades worn by the Queen's elite guard, shattered the identity of the Hrothgar people.
The event also completely fractured the Garlond family legacy. Deeply traumatized by the horrors of his father's obsession and the destruction of the city, Cid nan Garlond defected from the Garlean Empire. Fleeing to Eorzea, he dedicated his life to using magitek for the preservation of life rather than conquest, establishing the Garlond Ironworks.
For fifteen years, the exact sequence of events inside the citadel remained a mystery, heavily suppressed by the empire and buried deep within Cid’s repressed memories due to psychological trauma.
It was only much later, during the liberation campaigns of the Bozjan Resistance, that the Warrior of Light alongside the Sharlayan scholar Mikoto Jinba used aetherological memory-diving technology to explore Cid's fractured recollections. Through this investigation, the world finally learned the horrific truth: that the Bozja Incident was not a simple mechanical failure, but the tragic result of primal tempering that paved the way for the darkest era of modern history.
