In Final Fantasy XIV, the @Dragoon (DRG) is not just a flashy lance-wielding damage dealer; they are the historical elite vanguard of Ishgard, a holy see locked in a thousand-year conflict known as the Dragonsong War. To understand the Dragoon, you have to understand the tragic, bloody history of Ishgard and its relationship with the celestial dragons, the First Brood.
Here is the complete lore of the Dragoon, from its historical origins to its ultimate evolution.
For centuries, the citizens of Ishgard believed a holy myth: that King Thordan and his Knights Twelve were pure, righteous heroes chosen by the Halone (the Fury) to defend humanity against the sudden, unprovoked savagery of the dragon Nidhogg and his brood.
The truth, which you uncover during the Heavensward expansion, is far darker.
Originally, humans and dragons lived in peace in the region of Coerthas. They coexisted for two centuries, largely thanks to the bond between a human woman named Shiva and the great dragon Hraesvelgr. However, King Thordan and his knights grew envious of the dragons' functional immortality and the immense power residing in their eyes.
Betraying the peace, Thordan and his men ambushed and slaughtered Ratatoskr—one of the great dragons of the First Brood and sister to Nidhogg and Hraesvelgr. They consumed her eyes, absorbing her immense aetheric power. This act of ultimate betrayal granted Thordan and his bloodline superhuman strength, but it sparked Nidhogg’s eternal fury.
Nidhogg slaughtered King Thordan and four of his Knights Twelve in retribution. Thordan’s son, Prince Haldrath, took up his father's spear. In a desperate, bloody duel, Haldrath managed to pry both of Nidhogg's eyes from his skull.
Haldrath became the very first Dragoon. By holding Nidhogg's severed eyes, he realized the terrifying depth of the dragon's power. Instead of ascending the throne as king, Haldrath abdicated, choosing instead to wander the wilderness as a lone sentinel, using Nidhogg’s own stolen power to hunt the dragon's vengeful brood.
From Haldrath’s legacy, the Order of the Knights Dragoon was born.
Ishgard weaponized this stolen power. The Holy See kept one of Nidhogg's eyes hidden away in the depths of the city, using its lingering aether to empower a single, chosen warrior in every generation. This warrior is granted the title of the Azure Dragoon.
The Azure Dragoon is the only mortal capable of hearing the "Song of the Eye." By communing with Nidhogg's eye, the Azure Dragoon is blessed—and cursed—with the dragon's own primordial strength. They can leap high into the heavens, channel dragon-like aetherial energy through their spears, and pierce the impenetrable scales of the Dravanian horde.
A Dragoon's fighting style is entirely dictated by their prey. Because dragons fly, breathe devastating elemental fire, and possess immense physical mass, traditional infantry tactics are useless against them.
The Jump: Dragoons utilize specialized armor and intense physical conditioning to launch themselves hundreds of feet into the air. This allows them to match a dragon's altitude, using gravity and their own body weight to drive their lances through thick draconian hides.
The Wyrmwind and Blood of the Dragon: By tapping into the dragon's eye (or their own inner draconian aether), a Dragoon can enter a state known as the Blood of the Dragon. This manifests as a piercing, fiery aura. It bridges the gap between mortal and immortal, giving the Dragoon the speed, ferocity, and aetherial output of a lesser dragon.
The Lance: Dragoons use uniquely designed spears, often featuring hooked barbs or heavy, armor-piercing tips. The weapon is designed not just to wound, but to anchor a flying dragon to the ground or tear away its defensive scales.
Being the Azure Dragoon is a psychological tightrope. Because their power comes directly from Nidhogg’s eye, they are constantly exposed to Nidhogg’s overwhelming hatred, grief, and desire for vengeance.
If an Azure Dragoon’s willpower wavers, or if their own anger matches Nidhogg's, the eye can overwhelm their mind. They cease to be a defender of Ishgard and instead become a puppet of the brood—a tragic figure known as a "Dragon-thrall."
Before your character steps onto the scene, the reigning Azure Dragoon is Estinien Wyrmblood. Estinien’s entire village was slaughtered by Nidhogg when he was a child, fueling a blinding, obsessive hatred for dragons. This hatred made him an incredibly powerful weapon for Ishgard, but it also made him incredibly vulnerable to the eye's corruption.
When your character adopts the Dragoon job, something unprecedented happens: for the first time in history, two Azure Dragoons exist at the same time. Nidhogg's eye chooses to bestow its power upon you as well, sensing your immense Echo and martial prowess.
Throughout the Dragonsong War, you and Estinien fight side-by-side. However, the war reaches its tragic climax when Estinien, consumed by his desire to end Nidhogg once and for all, succumbs to the eye's influence after Nidhogg's physical body is slain. Nidhogg's spirit completely possesses Estinien, reshaping his armor into a horrific, draconic form and forcing you to fight your former ally.
With the help of Alphinaud and the spirit of Hraesvelgr, you manage to rip Nidhogg's eyes away from Estinien, saving his life and finally putting Nidhogg’s vengeful spirit to rest.
With Nidhogg dead and the eyes finally depleted of their malevolent energy, Ishgard enters an era of peace. Humans and dragons begin the long, painful process of rebuilding their ancient alliance.
This left the Dragoons in a strange historical position. Their entire identity was built on slaughtering dragons using a stolen, corrupting power.
Instead of disbanding, the Dragoons evolved. Led by a redeemed Estinien and new generational leaders, the modern Dragoon order redefined itself. They no longer fight against dragons; instead, they train alongside them. The jump that was once used to bring a dragon down from the sky is now used to defend the skies of Coerthas together.
The inner power of a modern Dragoon no longer relies on Nidhogg's severed eye. Instead, through your travels and your deep bonds with the First Brood (such as Midgardsormr and Hraesvelgr), you learn to awaken the dragon's flame within your own soul. You become a Dragoon not by stealing a dragon's power through bloodshed, but by understanding and channeling the true, majestic essence of the dragon spirit.
