Gridania

Gridania: Jewel of the Twelveswood

Nestled deep within the ancient, sprawling forest known as the Black Shroud—or the Twelveswood—Gridania is a city-state defined by its unbreakable, and sometimes unforgiving, bond with nature. Unlike the maritime thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa or the desert jewel of Ul'dah, Gridania is a labyrinth of winding waterways, wooden structures, and massive flora. Its people live in strict harmony with the forest, guided by the will of the enigmatic and powerful entities known as the elementals.

History and Foundation

The origins of Gridania are rooted in survival and compromise. Following the Sixth Umbral Calamity—a catastrophic global flood brought about by the abuse of magic during the War of the Magi—survivors fled into the Black Shroud. However, the forest was ruled by the elementals, ancient and immensely powerful spirits of nature. Angered by the destruction wrought by mankind, the elementals purged the intruders with a terrifying force known as the Green Wrath.

To survive, the Elezen and Hyur populations were forced underground, where they built the subterranean city of Gelmorra. For centuries, they lived in the damp darkness, desperately trying to prove their peaceful intentions to the spirits above. Eventually, with the help of the forest's Moogles acting as intermediaries, a pact was forged. The elementals permitted humanity to return to the surface, provided they live in absolute harmony with the Twelveswood and take only what the forest freely offered.

Thus, Gridania was founded. The subterranean ruins of Gelmorra were left behind, now serving as a haunting reminder of the city's dark past and a haven for monstrous creatures and outcasts.

Government and the Padjal

Gridania is a theocratic democracy, though true power ultimately rests with the elementals. The will of the forest is interpreted and enacted by the Seedseers, a council of leaders chosen from the Padjal.

The Padjal are a unique, rare subset of the Hyur race, touched by the power of the elementals. They are easily recognizable by the horns growing from their heads, their ageless appearance—often resembling children even when they are decades or centuries old—and their profound aptitude for white magic and communion with nature.

The current leader of Gridania is the Elder Seedseer, Kan-E-Senna. Wise, gentle, but resolutely firm when the safety of the forest is threatened, she commands the respect of the Gridanian people and represents the city-state in the Eorzean Alliance.

Culture and Society

Gridanian culture is entirely shaped by the necessity of appeasing the elementals. This has cultivated a society that is peaceful and deeply respectful of nature, but also highly superstitious, insular, and fearful of change.

The Concept of Woodsin

At the core of Gridanian daily life is the avoidance of Woodsin. Woodsin is a spiritual taint incurred by harming the forest—whether by cutting down a living tree without permission, overhunting, or using destructive magics. If too much Woodsin is accumulated, the elementals will invoke the Green Wrath, turning the very flora and fauna of the forest against the transgressor. To cleanse themselves of minor offenses, Gridanians regularly participate in purification rituals and festivals.

Industry and Craft

Because of their restrictions on logging and mining, Gridanians are master artisans of sustainable materials.

  • Woodworking: Gridanian carpenters are the finest in Eorzea. They craft everything from sturdy lances and bows to magnificent waterwheels and housing using fallen timber and carefully cultivated trees.

  • Leatherworking: Utilizing the hides of beasts culled to maintain the forest's ecological balance, Gridanian tanners produce exceptionally durable and lightweight armor.

  • Botany and Agriculture: Farming is done in careful rotation to preserve the soil. Foraging is a highly respected profession, ensuring that humanity only takes the bounty the forest can spare.

Distrust of Technology and Outsiders

Due to the elementals' disdain for unnatural machinery and the devastation wrought by the Garlean Empire, Gridanians are deeply suspicious of magitek and heavy industry. The presence of smoke-belching machines is seen as an affront to the woods. Consequently, outsiders (often called "adventurers") are initially met with cold suspicion. A newcomer must prove their respect for the forest before they are fully welcomed into the Carline Canopy or the city's bustling markets.

Religion and Beliefs

While the elementals dictate the laws of the land, the patron deity of Gridania is Nophica, the Matron. She is the goddess of abundance, agriculture, and the earth. Shrines to Nophica are scattered throughout the city and the Black Shroud, the most prominent being Nophica's Altar in Old Gridania. The citizens believe that Nophica’s boundless love provides the bounty of the forest, while the elementals serve as the strict guardians of that bounty.

Demographics and Social Dynamics

Gridania is predominantly populated by Midlander Hyur and Wildwood Elezen. Having built the city together after emerging from Gelmorra, the two races live in relative harmony. However, the strict laws of the forest have created social fractures.

  • The Duskwright Elezen: Many of the Elezen who refused to leave Gelmorra and accept the elementals' terms became the Duskwrights. Today, they are often subjected to severe prejudice in Gridania. Many are forced into banditry or poaching to survive in the Shroud, which only fuels the stereotype that all Duskwrights are criminals.

  • Keepers of the Moon: This matriarchal clan of Miqo'te has historically lived as nomadic hunters in the Black Shroud. Because they traditionally hunt without the permission of the elementals, they are frequently branded as poachers. Tensions between the Gridanian authorities and the Keeper tribes are an ongoing cultural struggle, though recent years have seen more Keepers attempting to integrate into city life.

Military: The Guardians of the Wood

Gridania does not have a standing army in the traditional sense; instead, it relies on specialized peacekeeping and defense forces designed to navigate the dense, treacherous terrain of the Black Shroud.

  • The Wood Wailers: Armed predominantly with polearms, the Wood Wailers patrol the forest to fend off bandits, poachers, and aggressive wildlife. They serve as the primary police force within the city walls and the immediate surrounding woods.

  • The Gods' Quiver: Master archers and trackers, the Quivermen are responsible for long-range patrols and external threats, such as the incursions of the Ixal beast tribe. They are fiercely devoted to defending the boundaries of the Twelveswood.

Together, these forces work in tandem with the forest itself. When Gridania goes to war, they utilize guerrilla tactics, trapping their enemies in the dense brush and striking from the canopy, proving that the wrath of the forest is not solely the domain of the elementals.
