The @Gunbreaker is one of Final Fantasy XIV's premier tank jobs, steeped in a rich history of revolution, royal guardianship, and a highly specialized martial art. Unlike traditional gunners or machinist-engineered firearms, a Gunbreaker does not fire standard bullets. Instead, they utilize a unique weapon known as a Gunblade, combining a sword blade with a revolver-like cylinder mechanism to trigger magical explosions upon impact.
Here is the complete lore of the Gunbreaker, from its ancient origins in northern Ilsabard to its modern-day practitioners.
The story of the Gunbreaker begins many centuries ago in the northern region of Ilsabard, specifically within the lost kingdom of Bozja. Long before the Garlean Empire rose to global dominance, the lands of Ilsabard were a patchwork of warring territories.
The ancient Hrothgar queens of Bozja ruled over a proud people, but they faced constant threats from rival nations—most notably the aggressive Allagan Empire in a much earlier era, and later, various aggressively expansionist neighbor states. To protect the Hrothgar matriarchs, an elite order of royal guards was formed. These protectors were known as the Blades of Gunnhildr, named after the legendary Hrothgar Queen Gunnhildr.
To combat heavily armored foes and magical entities, these guards needed a weapon that offered both the defensive capabilities of a sword and an explosive offensive edge. They invented the original Gunblade.
It is a common misconception in Eorzea that Gunbreakers use Garlean technology. In truth, it is the exact opposite.
Garlean Gunblades: The Garlean Empire eventually copied the visual design of the Bozjan weapon but engineered it to fire physical projectiles (bullets) out of a gun barrel attached to a sword.
Bozjan Gunblades (The Authentic Style): Authentic Gunblades have no barrel. The "firearm" portion is a cylinder loaded with aetherially infused cartridges. When a Gunbreaker pulls the trigger, they are not shooting a bullet; they are releasing a massive burst of stored magical energy (aether) directly along the edge of the blade at the exact millisecond it strikes a target. This creates a devastating, concussive force that can shatter armor, generate protective barriers, or unleash waves of explosive energy.
The term "Gunbreaker" itself stems from this origin. The Blades of Gunnhildr were famous for charging onto the frontlines and using their explosive strikes to literally break the firearms, shields, and ranks of invading armies.
For generations, the art of the Gunbreaker was passed down through elite Hrothgar lineages. However, tragedy struck Bozja during the modern era when the Garlean Empire invaded.
Recognizing the tactical value of Bozjan aetherial technology, the Empire sought to subjugate the region. A famous Hrothgar Gunbreaker named Radovan fought fiercely on the frontlines to protect his homeland. Despite the fierce resistance of the Gunbreakers, Bozja was ultimately annexed, turned into a Garlean imperial province, and its people were forced into labor or conscripted into the imperial military.
The final, catastrophic blow to the Gunbreaker homeland occurred during the Bozja Incident (years prior to the modern FFXIV narrative). Imperial scientists, led by Midas nan Garlond, attempted to test the transmission of the lesser moon Dalamud's energy using a massive tower in Bozja Citadel. The experiment failed spectacularly. A beam of raw aetherial energy obliterated Bozja Citadel, vaporizing the city and killing countless citizens and imperial soldiers alike in an instant.
With their homeland reduced to a smoking, radioactive crater and the surviving population scattered across the star, the proud tradition of the Gunbreaker was nearly wiped from history. The art survived only through a few scattered refugees and political prisoners who refused to let Queen Gunnhildr's legacy die.
The knowledge of the Gunbreaker enters the modern era primarily through Radovan, one of the last surviving masters of the traditional Bozjan style. Following the destruction of his homeland, Radovan was imprisoned by the Garlean Empire for refusing to serve as an imperial executioner.
After years of captivity, he managed to escape the Empire's clutches and fled south toward the realm of Aldenard, eventually arriving in Eorzea. Knowing that he was an exile in a strange land with a highly specialized and lethal skill set, Radovan decided to leverage his martial talents to survive. He formed a traveling mercenary partnership with a young, highly perceptive Elezen woman named Sophie, who acted as his business manager, strategist, and magical coordinator.
However, Radovan's heavy traditional Gunblade required a massive toll on his physical body and a constant supply of specialized aetherial cartridges. To create these cartridges, a Gunbreaker relies on alchemical components and raw, crystallized aether, which Sophie helped him source.
As Radovan traveled across Eorzea taking on dangerous mercenary contracts—hunting down formidable beasts, protecting merchants, and dealing with regional threats—he realized that his body was failing him due to years of imperial imprisonment and the grueling physical demands of the job. He feared that if he died, the ancient martial art of the Hrothgar queens would die with him.
This fear is what drives Radovan to take on an apprentice (the Player Character). By passing down his Soul Crystal—a traditional job stone containing the combat memories and tactical knowledge of generations of Bozjan royal guards—Radovan ensures that the legacy of the Blades of Gunnhildr lives on, ready to protect the innocent once more, not just in lost Bozja, but across the entire world.
