The lore of Light and Darkness in Final Fantasy XIV is one of the game's greatest narrative achievements because it completely subverts the classic fantasy trope. In the universe of FFXIV, Light is not inherently "good," and Darkness is not inherently "evil."
Instead, they are fundamental cosmic forces—polarities of Aether (the life energy of the universe)—that must remain in balance.
Here is how the lore breaks down from the underlying mechanics of the universe to the cosmic war that shaped it.
To understand the lore, you have to look at how the inhabitants of Etheirys (the world of FFXIV) categorize energy. Aether comes in six elemental forms (Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, Ice, Lightning), and every element leans toward one of two polarities:
Darkness (The Astral Polarity): Represents activity, chaos, growth, and volatility. It is the energy of things in motion. When Darkness goes out of control, it leads to rapid, cancerous mutation and endless hunger.
Light (The Umbral Polarity): Represents passivity, order, tranquility, and stasis. It is the energy of things at rest. When Light goes out of control, it bleaches the world of color, stopping all movement, emotion, and life in a state of frozen "perfection."
Neither state is capable of supporting life on its own. Life requires both the spark of Darkness to grow and the structure of Light to maintain form.
Long before the current era, the world was whole, inhabited by an advanced, practically immortal race known as the Ancients. Their paradise was suddenly shattered by an apocalyptic event called The Final Days, where creation magic went haywire and the planet began to tear itself apart.
To save their world, the Ancients sacrificed half their population to summon a god of immense power:
Zodiark (The God of Darkness): Aligned with the Astral polarity, Zodiark was designed to rewrite the physical laws of reality. By using the "active" power of Darkness, he halted the apocalypse and spurred the stagnant world back into motion.
However, Zodiark's followers, the Ascians, wanted to sacrifice the newly seeded life on the planet to resurrect the Ancients who had died to summon him. A dissenting faction believed the new life deserved a chance to live. To stop Zodiark, they summoned a second god:
Hydaelyn (The Goddess of Light): Aligned with the Umbral polarity, Hydaelyn was the ultimate physical embodiment of stasis and division.
When Hydaelyn and Zodiark clashed, Hydaelyn won by using her innate power of stasis and division. She struck Zodiark with a blow so powerful that it "sundered" (split) reality itself.
The original world, Zodiark, and the souls of every living creature were shattered into 14 distinct dimensions:
1. The Source: The prime world where the player character (The Warrior of Light) lives.
2. The Thirteen Reflections (Shards): Parallel alternate dimensions.
For millennia following this event, the surviving Ascians worked from the shadows. Their goal was to cause catastrophic global disasters (Calamities) on the Source. Each Calamity breaks down the barrier between the Source and one of the Reflections, rejoining them and making Zodiark whole again.
The story shows us exactly what happens when either Light or Darkness completely consumes a world.
The Ascians first attempted to flood the Thirteenth Reflection with Darkness. However, they miscalculated, and the Astral energy caused a runaway chain reaction. The world collapsed into a chaotic, desolate dimension known as the Void. Its inhabitants mutated into Voidsent—monsters driven by an endless, insatiable hunger for aether because their world's frantic, active energy burns through it constantly.
In the Shadowbringers expansion, the player travels to the First Reflection, a world standing on the brink of being entirely consumed by Light. Because Light is the energy of absolute stasis, a "Flood of Light" doesn't destroy violently; it freezes. It erases the night sky, bleaching the world into a blinding, perpetual daytime.
Those corrupted by overwhelming Light turn into Sin Eaters.
> Key insight: Sin Eaters are visually angelic, bathed in white with halos and wings, but they are terrifying. Because Light is stasis, Sin Eaters feel no pain, no fear, and no desire. They exist only to pacify other living things, transforming them into more Sin Eaters to enforce perfect, lifeless tranquility.

## The Warrior's Role
You start the game as the "Warrior of Light," chosen by Hydaelyn to protect the world from the Ascians. For much of the early story, you are led to believe you are fighting for absolute good.
However, as the lore deepens, your role shifts. You are not meant to eradicate Darkness, because a world of pure Light is a dead world. Instead, your true role is to be an agent of Balance. When Darkness threatens the Source, you champion the Light. But when Light threatens to smother the First, you must take up the mantle of the Warrior of Darkness to bring back the night sky, returning chaos and growth to a world dying of perfect order.
