The lore of the Monk in Final Fantasy XIV is deeply tied to the history, politics, and spirituality of the highland nation of Ala Mhigo. It is a story of religious devotion, political betrayal, martial mastery, and the delicate balance of internal energy.
Here is the complete history and lore of the Monk.
The history of the Monk begins over a thousand years ago in the mountain region of Gyr Abania. A group of ascetics formed a monastic order dedicated to the worship of Rhalgr, the Destroyer—the god of havoc and one of the Twelve deities of Eorzea. This order became known as the Fist of Rhalgr.
The monks of this order did not view destruction as inherently evil; rather, they saw it as a necessary part of the cosmic cycle. To them, destruction clears away the old and decaying to make room for new creation. To honor the Destroyer, they sought to turn their own bodies into ultimate weapons through brutal physical training and intense spiritual meditation.
At the heart of a Monk’s power is the concept of Chakra. According to the Fist of Rhalgr, the human body contains a network of internal energy channels. Along these channels sit seven main focal points, or "gates," known as the Seven Chakras.
In an ordinary person, these gates are tightly closed to prevent internal energy from burning out the physical body. Through years of excruciating physical trial and deep meditation, a Monk learns to force these gates open, unlocking a massive wellspring of latent physical and spiritual energy (*aether*).
Opening a Chakra grants superhuman strength, blinding speed, and hardened resilience. However, opening them is incredibly dangerous; an unrefined mind or a weak body would be instantly torn apart by the sudden rush of internal power.
As the Fist of Rhalgr grew over centuries, a theological and practical split occurred within the temple, dividing the monks into two factions:
The Light Sect: These monks focused on opening their Chakras through peaceful meditation, rigorous but structured training, and aligning themselves with the ambient life energy of the world.
The Dark Sect: These monks believed that the true way to open the Chakras was through the raw, desperate instinct of survival. They forced their gates open by placing themselves—and each other—in lethal, bloody combat. They believed that the shadow cast by death was the fastest catalyst for awakening a warrior's true power.
For a long time, the two sects maintained a tense but functional balance, coexisting within the main temple of Schism in Gyr Abania.
Because of their unmatched martial prowess, the Fist of Rhalgr eventually became a major political and military power in Ala Mhigo. They acted as elite protectors of the nation and advisors to the crown. However, this influence ultimately brought about their destruction.
In the late Sixth Astral Era, the last king of Ala Mhigo, Theodoric (known as the King of Ruin), grew wildly paranoid. Terrified of any power that could challenge his throne, he turned his sights on the Monks. In a massive, coordinated betrayal, King Theodoric sent his royal army to lay siege to the Temple of Schism.
The monks fought bravely, but they were vastly outnumbered and caught entirely by surprise. The temple was burned to the ground, its texts destroyed, and the Monks were systematically slaughtered. Only a tiny handful of practitioners managed to escape into hiding, scattering across Eorzea. For all intents and purposes, the Fist of Rhalgr was wiped from history.
The art of the Monk would have stayed dead if not for Erik, a brilliant but notoriously eccentric Ala Mhigan scholar living in Ul'dah. Erik studied the battlefield aetherial residues left behind by ancient conflicts. He realized that when Monks fought, their open Chakras left distinct, high-frequency aetherial prints in the environment.
To test his theories, Erik partnered with Widargelt, a surviving high-ranking monk of the Fist of Rhalgr who had been living under an alias. Widargelt sought to rebuild the order, though he was initially consumed by a bitter desire for bloody vengeance against the Garlean Empire, which had conquered Ala Mhigo following Theodoric's downfall.
Through their research—and with the help of the Warrior of Light—Widargelt began to understand that the true strength of a Monk could not be achieved by relying on the Light Sect or the Dark Sect alone.
For decades, monks believed that a person could only unlock either the Light or the Dark Chakras. However, the Warrior of Light and Widargelt discovered that these two paths were actually two halves of a whole.
By engaging in intense battles while maintaining a disciplined, meditative mind, a Monk can harmonize the Light and Dark Chakras. When these opposing forces fuse, they unlock a deeper, unparalleled level of martial mastery, allowing the Monk to execute legendary techniques that hadn't been seen since the height of the Fist of Rhalgr.
Today, the Monk is no longer a political tool or an army for a paranoid king. Under Widargelt's reformed leadership, the new Fist of Rhalgr serves as a symbol of Ala Mhigan resilience, blending ancient spiritual devotion with the physical discipline required to protect the realm.
