Viera

Viera

The Viera are one of the most striking and culturally distinct races in the *Final Fantasy XIV* universe. Characterized by their tall, slender builds, elegant posture, and long, rabbit-like ears, they are deeply bound to the natural world. While they are most famous as the reclusive guardians of the wood in the Source’s Eastern continent of Othard, the reflections of the star reveal fascinating variations in their history, lifestyle, and culture—specifically the Viis of the First and the Shetona of Tural.

Physiological Traits and Biology

Physically, Viera are easily recognizable by their long, expressive ears, which grant them exceptionally acute hearing, allowing them to detect the slightest shifts in their environment or the approach of intruders. They possess elongated limbs, sharp claws, and a naturally high physical agility that makes them peerless hunters and survivalists.

A unique aspect of Viera biology is their prolonged youth and lifespan. Viera live roughly three times longer than a standard human (Hyur), often reaching upwards of 250 years while maintaining a youthful, vigorous appearance for the vast majority of their lives.

Perhaps the most defining cultural and biological quirk is the strict gender division driven by their birth rates. Viera are born appearing identical, and their gender is impossible to determine externally until they reach adolescence, roughly around the age of thirteen. At this milestone, the physical traits of either a male or female manifest.

Females make up the vast majority of the population, forming the bedrock of Viera settlements. Males, who are born in much smaller numbers, are instantly separated from the community upon reaching maturity to live solitary lives as protectors, a dynamic that heavily dictates their societal structure.

The Viera of the Source (Golmore and Skatay)

On the Source, the Viera primarily hail from the southern regions of Othard, specifically the Golmore Jungle and the Skatay Range. They are divided into two distinct clans based on their ancestral habitats:

  • The Rava: Recognizable by their copper-brown skin tones, which allow them to blend seamlessly into the dappled shadows of the jungle canopy.

  • The Veena: Featuring much fairer, snow-white skin, evolved to camouflage against the harsh, snowy peaks of the Skatay Range.

History and the Green Word

For thousands of years, the Viera of Othard have lived under the strict mandate of the **Green Word**—a sacred, unwritten code dictating that the Viera must live in perfect harmony with the forest and strictly forbid any contact or meddling with the outside world. To the Rava and Veena, the wood is not just a home; it is a living, breathing entity that speaks to them.

Historically, this isolationism kept them insulated from major global conflicts, such as the rise of the Allagan Empire. However, when the Garlean Empire invaded Othard and annexed the region of Dalmasca, the Viera’s sanctuaries were threatened. Many villages were burned, forcing a handful of Viera to abandon their ancestral homes.

The Split Society

Viera culture on the Source is fiercely matriarchal out of sheer necessity. Villages are entirely populated and governed by women, who raise the children, manage resources, and hunt within designated territories.

The males live a drastically different existence. Known as the **Wood-Wrights**, they are taken into the deep jungle by an elder male mentor the moment their gender manifests. They undergo brutal training to become solitary, stealthy guardians. A male Viera’s duty is to patrol the borders of the wood, eliminating threats before they ever reach the villages. They live entirely alone, meeting with female villages only briefly and occasionally to trade, pass on newborn male children, or mate.

Because the Green Word is absolute, any Viera who chooses to leave the forest to see the wider world is instantly branded an exile. They are forbidden from ever returning, and their kin will treat them as if they are dead. Those exiles who wander into Eorzea or independent city-states often work as mercenaries, adventurers, or scouts, forever carrying the bittersweet burden of their lost homeland.

The Viis of the First (Norvrandt)

In the First—the parallel reflection of the Source—the Viera are known as the **Viis**. They reside almost exclusively in the ancient, shadowed canopy of the Rak'tika Greatwood. While they share the exact physical traits of the Rava and Veena (splitting into dark-skinned and light-skinned factions), their history diverged significantly due to the regional politics of their world and the catastrophic Flood of Light.

The Loyal Guardians of Ronka

Unlike their counterparts on the Source, who shun kingdoms and empires, the Viis of the First were once the treasured citizens and elite military force of the ancient **Imperial Court of Ronka**. Thousands of years ago, they swore a sacred oath to the Ronkan Emperor to protect the empire's secrets, magical relics, and holy pyramids buried within the jungle.

When the Ronkan Empire collapsed, the Viis did not abandon their post. For generations, they maintained their vigil. When the Flood of Light decimated ninety percent of the world, the Rak'tika Greatwood survived, and the Viis doubled down on their isolation to protect what remained of the Ronkan legacy from the outside world and the predatory Sin Eaters.

Cultural Evolution

Because of their ties to a grand imperial past, the Viis possess a deeply formal, respectful, and structured society. They guard the ruins of Ronka with religious fervor. When outsiders—such as the Night Blessed or the Scions of the Seventh Dawn—entered the wood, the Viis initially treated them with lethal hostility.

However, unlike the uncompromising Viera of the Source, the Viis proved capable of shifting their isolationist stance. Upon realizing the Warrior of Light was the ally of the ancient allies of Ronka, they opened their borders, showing a capacity for cultural flexibility and political diplomacy unseen in the rigid adherents of the Green Word. Their societal gender split remains identical to the Source, with solitary male Viis acting as silent wardens of the deeper, untamed brush.

The Shetona of Tural

Across the jade seas in the western continent of Tural, the Viera are known as the **Shetona**. They primarily hail from the dense, mist-shrouded canopies and rugged highlands of **North Tural**, specifically the region of Xak Tural. While they share the foundational biological traits of all Viera, their cultural identity has been shaped entirely by the history and philosophy of Tural.

Integration and the Dawn Servants

Unlike the aggressively isolationist Rava, Veena, or Viis, the Shetona have spent the last eight centuries integrated into a massive, multi-racial society. When Gulool 6Ja Ja unified the continent and founded the Nation of Tuliyollal, the Shetona chose to participate in this grand experiment of peace.

While they still deeply value their privacy and prefer the solace of nature, they do not hold a religious taboo against outsiders. You will find Shetona trading in bustling ports, working alongside the reptilian Mamool Ja, the burly Pelupelu, or the diminutive Hanuhanu. They are respected throughout Tural as master trackers, scouts, and woodsmen, frequently employed by the monocled authorities of the nation to map uncharted territories or handle dangerous wildlife.

Cultural Outlook and the Modern Frontier

The Shetona do not follow the Green Word. Their relationship with nature is pragmatic and respectful rather than mystically restrictive. Because Xak Tural has become a booming frontier of technological and industrial advancement—especially with the introduction of ceruleum-powered railways and mining operations—the Shetona have had to navigate the balance between preserving their natural hunting grounds and embracing the changing world.

While many Shetona choose to remain in traditional, elevated woodland villages to raise their young in peace, it is entirely common for adventurous Shetona to board trains, move to urban centers, and fully engage with modern Tural mechanical industries. Their male counterpart traditions are far less severe; while male Shetona still lean toward solitary professions like long-range scouting or wilderness hunting, they are not strictly exiled or completely severed from the social fabric of their communities in the way Othardian males are.

Summary of the Viera Spirit

Whether they are guarding the hidden secrets of Golmore under the threat of imperial exile, defending the stone pyramids of a long-dead Ronkan Emperor in the First, or adapting to the steam-whistles and steel rails of Xak Tural as the Shetona, the Viera remain defined by their patience, acute senses, and long-term perspective. Because they live for centuries, they view the fleeting rise and fall of shorter-lived races with a calm detachment, stepping out of the shadows only when the fate of the natural world hangs in the balance.
