Locklear — Knight of the Prince’s Court
Locklear — Knight of the Prince’s Court
Aliases & Titles
Sir Locklear — Knight of the Kingdom of the Isles, sworn to the service of Prince Arutha conDoin of Krondor.
Locky (to a very few, and only in private) — a nickname from his youth that he tolerates with a wry smile.
The Prince’s Errand Blade (in the barracks) — for his habit of being sent on delicate, often dangerous assignments that require both diplomacy and steel.
Race: Human (Isleman) Homeland: The Kingdom of the Isles Known For: Loyal service to Prince Arutha, deft handling of politically sensitive missions, and surviving situations that should have killed him twice over.
I. Early Life and Service
Locklear was born to a minor noble family in the Kingdom’s western reaches — respectable enough to afford a martial education, but far from the great houses that shaped court politics. From an early age, he showed a knack for both swordplay and reading a room, a combination that caught the attention of recruiters for the Prince’s household guard.
By his early twenties, Locklear had earned his spurs and a place in Arutha’s service. He quickly proved himself as a man who could be trusted with assignments that required more than brute force — escorting envoys, carrying sensitive messages, and smoothing over disputes before they became duels.
II. The Soldier’s Temperament
Locklear is not the loudest man in the room, but neither is he the most reserved. He has a soldier’s practicality, a dry sense of humour, and a habit of masking unease with a quip. Among comrades, he’s known for his steady hand in a fight and his ability to keep his head when plans go sideways — which, in Krondor, they often do.
He’s also known for a streak of stubbornness. Once he commits to a course, it takes more than orders to turn him aside. Arutha has learned to use that trait carefully, sending him where persistence is an asset rather than a liability.
III. In the Prince’s Service
By the time the events leading to Betrayal at Krondor begin, Locklear has already served in several border skirmishes and more than one covert mission into politically unstable territories. He’s escorted nobles through bandit‑haunted passes, negotiated with mercenaries, and once talked his way out of a siege camp with nothing but a wineskin and a deck of cards.
Arutha values him as much for his judgment as for his sword arm. In a court where politics can be as deadly as steel, Locklear’s ability to read intent — and to act decisively when the moment comes — makes him an indispensable agent.
IV. Personality and Traits
Loyal to the Core: His oath to Arutha is unshakable.
Dry Humour: Uses wit to break tension, especially with allies under strain.
Pragmatic Fighter: Prefers to win without unnecessary bloodshed, but will not hesitate when steel is required.
Diplomatic Edge: Understands that some battles are fought with words, not weapons.
Steady Under Pressure: Keeps his composure when others falter.
V. Where the Story Stands
As Betrayal at Krondor opens, Locklear is tasked with an unusual assignment: escorting a Moredhel prisoner — Gorath of the Ardanien — to Krondor for an audience with Prince Arutha. The mission is politically volatile: a sworn enemy of the Kingdom walking under the Prince’s protection is enough to set half the court whispering and the other half sharpening blades.
Locklear doesn’t yet know the full scope of what’s coming — the plots, the betrayals, the shadow war moving beneath the surface — but he knows one thing: if Arutha trusts him with this, it’s because the stakes are higher than anyone is saying aloud.
