Lieutenant Aaron
Lieutenant Aaron, a soldier at Northwarden, is summoned by Baron Gabot to place Seigneur James on the night watch for a chance to interview the fortress's guards without disrupting their schedules.
Aciala
Aciala is an aged eldar advisor to Queen Aglaranna in Elvandar. When the party visits, they find him standing with Aglaranna's other advisers, and he introduces himself and says he is pleased at Gorath's arrival.[1]
Alicia
Anita is the name of Princess Anita conDoin's mother. Anita and Prince Arutha plan to name their coming child Anita if it is a girl.[2]
Bronwynn Alpress
Bronwynn Alpress was a young woman with whom Squire Locklear fell in love suring the Siege of Armengar. She was killed by a troll in the Battle of Armengar, an event which shattered Locklear and for which he never forgave himself, and is memorialized on a headstone over an empty grave outside Armengar, with the epitaph "My first love." When preparing to infiltrate Raglam in search of moredhel battle plans, Locklear mentions Bronwynn as an example of the friends he has lost every time he travels to the Northlands.
Althafain the Artificer
Althafain the Artificer was a historical Midkemian magician. He took part in the Battle of Carse, and is credited by a book in The Vaults for first using the otherwise trivial Invitation spell tactically to drag a band of Dark Brothers into a trap. He introduced Flame Root Oil to the Kingdom of the Isles, and Althafain's Icer, a magical tool, is named after him, with the instructions on its handle attributed to him.
Amelia
Amelia is one of Owyn's cousins, a daughter of the Duchess in Yabon. Squire Phillip, who met both her and Owyn at a wedding shortly before Owyn's first encounter with the party, believes she was the prettiest of the Duchess's daughters. She has at least one sister, Katherine.
Ami
Ami is the daughter of Count Corvalis's solicitor, Myron. The two live just outside Cavall Keep.
In the novelization, Myron's daughter is not named; Ugyne Corvalis, who adores her, considers her a lovely little girl.[3]
Captain Anselm
Captain Anselm is a soldier working for Duke Romney. If the party tries to return to the Romney meeting hall after being turned away, Sergeant Yearly tells them to leave before he and the captain have to turn them into river chaff.
Brother Anthony
Brother Anthony is an Ishapian priest who works in the Vaults at Sarth. He dislikes unsupervised strangers wandering among the stacks, concerned about losing valuable books to casual browsers. Brother Marc, after sneaking the Abbey's only copy of the Saaha Bela'hi out for the party to study, asks them to read it quickly before Brother Anthony finds it gone.
Ashantuk
Ashantuk, brother to Jodwah who led the Eagle Clan and uncle of Jodwah's son Delekhan, was a moredhel who betrayed and killed Gorath's father during the dissolution of the Speaker's peace, leaving the boy to take his father's place as leader of the Hawk Clan. After growing to adulthood, Gorath tracked down Ashantuk, flung his head at Jodwah's feet, and defeated Jodwah in fair combat, leading to the two clans merging into the Clan Ardanien.[4]
B
Bardol
Bardol was a moredhel in the Northlands who, having no sons, sought a strong warrior to wed his daughter. In exchange for protection, Gorath, the young leader of the Hawk Clan, knelt before him to swear alliance. Gorath led his people into the great ice mountains and proved a capable leader as they hunted and thrived for twenty-five years. His wife bore him children, but would later die,[5] leaving him to marry Cullich.[6]
Barghist
An old chess player who opened the Queen's Row Inn thirty years before the story. A fair player, he launched the inn's reputation as a meeting-ground where chess enthusiasts, local and otherwise, gather to test their mettle.[7]
Father Barner
Father Barner, Prince Arutha's healer, accompanied him to the siege at Northwarden and prepared restorative powder to maintain James and Locklear's strength during the hard ride that would follow.[8]
Belandra
Belandra is a short, plump woman who assists the high priestess of Silban. Sternly devout and overprotective of the high priestess's health during stressful events, she is chastised for trying to turn the party away despite her superior's exhaustion following a difficult ritual, and reacts with shock when the high priestess abolishes the Festival of the Stranger. The high priestess notes that if Belandra could adhere to the spirit of Silban's creed as well as to the letter, she might grow to succeed her someday.
Harold Beleforte
Harold Beleforte is the father of Owyn Beleforte and the brother of Count Geoffrey Corvalis. He is a stern taskmaster who despises magicians as itinerant mountebanks and forbids his son from learning magic. Corvalis agrees that Owyn's place is at Harold's side, learning to rule.
In the game's novelization, Owyn's father is the Baron of Timons. His given name is not mentioned, but the family's surname is Belefote.[9]
Hailey Betencourt
Hailey Betencourt is a trader who lives in a small house south of the Highcastle crossroads. He is married to Sara Halfgate, who is wary of his temper but wishes to please him by finding him the pair of Leather Leggings he wants as a present for the Midsummer holiday. Squire Phillip, who has done business with him on behalf of his father, recommends negotiating with him when the party asks where to acquire a Bag of Grain.
Bethlany
Bethlany is a young dwarven woman of the Grey Towers who shows Owyn and Gorath to their room in Caldara. She can also sometimes sense the power that Gorath perceives in the room, explaining that Tomas Megarson sometimes resided there when wintering in Caldara, and tells them to call for her if they need anything.[10]
Yellow Bill
Yellow Bill, also known as Old Bill, was a Mocker from whom James thought to purchase some keys. He was killed by the Crawler's agents less than a month before the party learns of his fate from Limm.
Mejakaar Blackpatch
Mejakaar Blackpatch was a person who moved into a keep over one of the entrances of the Mac Bourgalan Dok, which was at that time owned by the dwarves. As reported in a document found in Stellan's office, Blackpatch was deeded the mines and all wealth therein. After his death, which was long ago even as the dwarves reckon time, ownership of the mines reverted to the Brothers of Ishap.
Duke Brendan
Duke Brendan is the Lord of the Southern Marches. As there is no Baron of Dorgin, the lands outside of the dwarven enclave there are under his care. When the party arrived at Krondor, they found him at dinner with the Prince, Princess, Knight-Marshal Gandan, Makala, and others. He was present at Gorath's first explanation of his mission, but was not among those who witnessed Gorath's subsequent interrogation.[11]
Briana
Briana is the wife of Duke Martin. When the party meets with Martin south of Northwarden, James asks whether Briana sent him so far from Crydee to hunt rabbits for the ducal stew.
Butterball
Butterball is the pet name of an amply endowed woman whose family abandoned their home in Eggley during the Festival of the Stranger, returning with the village's other residents once Stellan's murderer is brought to justice. Answering the door with a child on her hip, she tells the party to go back to the inn and wait, as her husband will not be joining them there until he finishes his chores. Inside, a man weakly protests that he doesn't know these people, but the party hears the sound of a blow and a muffled shout before silence falls.
