Caladin

Caladin is a typically taciturn elf who was part of a squad of six guarding the river bordering elven lands in the Green Heart. When Gorath and Owyn stopped at the ford to await permission to cross, Caladin addressed them from hiding in the elven tongue. Gorath replied in the King's tongue, and Caladin, after hearing their mission and lineages, allowed them to cross and, along with his colleagues Hilar and Travin, escorted them on the two-day journey from the river to Queen Aglaranna's court in Elvandar. On the way, he confirmed Owyn's sense that something was strange about a nearby sleeping glade, guessing that Owyn must have some magical skills to be able to sense it.[12]

Calis

Calis, a young elf with very fair white-blond hair, is a younger brother of Prince Calin. He almost runs into Calin while playing the part of the hare in a hound and hare game with some friends, realizing why Calin is speaking the Kingdom tongue when he sees Gorath and Owyn accompanying him. Explaining that he lets his friends almost keep up with him so that they do not get discouraged during the game, he welcomes Owyn in Kingdom tongue and tells Gorath in a different language that he will fight him if necessary but would rather be his friend. Gorath stepped up and shakes his hand, freeing him to resume his game with the other elven boys, and bemusedly translates his greeting for Owyn, noting to Calin that his younger brother is a remarkable youth.[13]

Master Carolus

Master Carolus was a resident of Romney and the caretaker or associate of a young boy, Jason. Before abandoning the boy, he told Jason not to be upset at his departure because he was going to a nice place where people were like him, and that one day "the Collectors" would come and also take Jason to a pretty place with boys like him. His otherwise unexplained disappearance left Jason desolate and alone until being put to work at the Black Sheep Tavern, and he would continue to live in fear of being taken by the Collectors of Carolus's story.

Dauphiness Cassandra of Queg

Cassandra, Dauphiness of Queg, is the daughter-in-law of King Lebeus of Queg. Quegian Brandy, a finer and less bitter drink than that produced in the Kingdom of the Isles, is fermented in her vineyards.

Devon worked for her as a mercenary, at one time capturing Abuk and intending to present her to him as a gift. Eventually, fed up with both her and the king, Devon and his friend Spitzer boarded Cassandra's war galley, the Storm's Master, and sunk Lebeus's flagship with all hands aboard. He burned his Writs of Passage that day and has had nothing to do with the Dauphiness or "her bastard father-in-law" since.

Celindra

Celindra is a beautiful young woman who lives in Kenting Rush. James relates that a year ago, when he was traveling to Northwarden to see a friend, he and Celindra became friendly over supper and she snuck into his room that night. Answering her door, Celindra's smile of recognition changes to concern just before a rather large man brushes her aside and punches James in the face. As his vision clears, Celindra introduces him to her husband, adding, "I've told him all about you."

Botho Chandler

Botho Chandler was a tremendously fat man who attended a guildmasters' meeting convened by Duke Romney. He suggested that the Riverpullers' leader might have been assassinated by another guild leader, perhaps even one of those present. Another man leaned across the table and grabbed his shirt, calling him an overweight cat's innard and demanding a name to go with his accusations before the Duke put a stop to the argument. Later, while fighting with the leader of the Miller's Guild, Chandler was cornered by three mercenaries and killed in an alleyway outside the Romney meeting hall. The killers were arrested and Chandler's body was brought back into the hall and covered with a sheet to await the undertakers.

Chochoan

When the party bids Sumani farewell in Chapter 3, he wishes for Chochoan to watch over them. James guesses that Chochoan is a Tsurani god, and while unsure that a Tsurani deity has influence in Midkemia, concludes that he will take luck wherever he can get it.

Father Charity

Father Charity is a figure associated with Midwinter's Festival. Owyn feels like Father Charity when presenting Lurough with supplies to prevent a tavern riot during an alcohol shortage.

Charles

Charles is the nickname of a Tsurani man who worked for Duke Martin in Crydee. He is the only Tsurani James had met at the time of the story, and was called Charles because no one could pronounce his Tsurani name.

Borric and Erland conDoin

Borric and Erland conDoin, two rambunctious eleven-year-old boys, are the twin sons of Prince Arutha and Princess Anita conDoin. Despite the twins' young age, Count Geoffrey Corvalis hopes to make his adult daughter Ugyne a princess by arranging a future marriage with one of them when they turn thirteen. Seigneur James, though dubious due to the significant age gap, promises to mention the matter to Prince Arutha on his next visit to Krondor.

Carline conDoin

Carline conDoin is a sister of Prince Arutha. He used to playfully threaten that his father was going to tie her to the mainmast of Krondor's Glory and let Quegians passing through the harbor use her for target practice.

In the Riftwar Saga, Princess Carline conDoin was interested in Pug before the Riftwar but ultimately married Laurie the minstrel, who was made Duke of Salador so that the Princess would not be marrying a commoner.

Corbi

Corbi, a soldier quartered at Northwarden, is the fiancee of Thea Halfgate. Tamney the Minstrel has been facilitating their long-distance relationship for several months, and in Chapter 3, James prevents the smuggling of a love letter for Thea out of Northwarden as part of his assessment of the fortress's security. In terror at the upcoming moredhel attack, Tamney would come to mislead Corbi with a false hint of a potential tryst with Thea, causing him to desert his post as a treasury guard so Tamney could steal funds for an escape. Later, as an apology for misusing their friendship, Tamney brought back a Geomancy Stone as an attractive adornment for Corbi's wedding band.

Swordmaster Corby

Swordmaster Corby is a Kingdom official. His signature officiates notices on both levels of the Thieves' Highway that transport through the sewers under Krondor is prohibited except on official Kingdom business.

Crenard

Crenard is a Rogue who terrorizes the King's Highway between Silden and Sloop. Before joining battle with the party, he boasts of having "a nice arrangement" with the innkeeper at the nearby River Pilot's Folly, and mocks them for daring to interfere with him. Despite his claims, there is no sign that the innkeeper is aware of him.
