Minor Characters (Betrayal at Krondor) T-W

T

Tabar

Tabar is the proprietor of the Candlemaker's Grin, an inn in Kenting Rush. He has an exclusive business relationship with the local baker, being the sole purchaser of his bread.

Tad

Tad, a human stableboy of twelve or thirteen years, cares for Baron Corvallis's horses, which are kept kept at the Duck's Head Inn because the Baron no longer has a proper stableyard. Tad and Owyn remember each other from Owyn's childhood visits to his uncle's keep; Owyn is impressed at his new responsibilities, and Tad apologetically explains that the Baron is not likely to provide hospitality to the party and instead arranges a room for them at the inn. A short while later, he tells Ugyne Corvalis that she can find her cousin there.[46]

Tathar

Tathar, one of Queen Aglaranna's Spellweavers, has been helping to put out the fires ignited by the wyverns with which the moredhel are attacking the Green Heart. Working night and day to quell the remaining wyverns, he taught Prince Calin the cantrip Thy Master's Will to turn them aside. Though Tathar explained why a Wyvern's Egg must be found every time the spell is cast, Calin had difficulty following the principle behind the necessity.

Jamie Tiller

Jamie Tiller is a chess enthusiast who defended his title against Abbaye Ishap student Kyle Fischer at the Queen's Row Inn. Tiller moved his queen's pawn to fourth rank, and when Fischer opened with Abbar's Gambit, Tiller maneuvered into it with his knight, sacrificed his King's rook, and took the priest, a move which James describes as brilliant but leaving Tiller's queen vulnerable. The match was highly advertized and Ivan Skaald declared it wondrous.

Timothy

Father Timothy was the Lector at the Shrine of Astalon. Seigneur James remembers studying under him as a youth, particularly recalling a lesson on Kahooli. Father's Timothy's recent passing left the role of Lector to Father Francis.

Amos Trask (Captain Trenchard)

Amos Trask, also known as Captain Trenchard, is a privateer who became the Admiral of the Western Fleet. The crew of the Mist Devil boasts that their ship is the only one swift enough to give Captain Trenchard the slip. Duke Martin remarks that Patrus reminds him of Trask, and James agrees that the two would "either love each other or hang one another from a gibbet." James once snuck Trask, along with several other important personages, out of Krondor while the city was besieged by Jocko Radburn and Guy du Bas-Tyra.

Travin

Travin is a typically taciturn elf who, along with Caladin and Hilar, was part of a squad of six guarding the river bordering elven lands in the Green Heart. The three escorted Gorath and Owyn on the two-day journey from the river to Queen Aglaranna's court in Elvandar.[47]

Baron Troville

Baron Troville is a baron from Highcastle. The party finds him away when they visit, but can later attend his lecture on tactics in Malac's Cross, where he awaits volunteers from Darkmoor and Salador with whom he hopes to bolster his garrison against Delekhan. His five-hour lecture on defensive tactics and techniques essential to warfare in the Northlands, ending only when his energy flags, raises the party's Assessment Skill.

In the novelization, Abbot Graves tells the party that the second of two upcoming lectures would be given by Baldwin de la Troville, but the party does not attend; James notes that both lecturers are people who have Duke Guy du Bas-Tyra's trust.[48] Later, in Romney, James remarks that Baron Baldwin has finally sent Walter of Gyllenholt south from Highcastle.[49] After the siege of Northwarden, Prince Arutha sends the party Highcastle as fast as possible with orders to strip the garrison for a forced march to Sethanon, afterward proceeding to the Dimwood in advance of the soldiers; after conveying the warning, they spent one night in Highcastle's comfort before preceding the Baron's force to the Dimwood.[50]

Father Tully

Father Tully is a priest in Krondor. After finding a cache of 34 sovereigns under the floor of the infectious house, the party leader resolves to give Father Tully a charitable donation of equal value if they survive to see the city again.

U

Udell, a dwarf of the Grey Towers, with an incredibly thick black beard, a huge bristle-brush mustache, and untameable black hair, is a younger brother of King Dolgan. Wrapped in a heavy cloak, he approaches Gorath and Owyn in the Green Heart half an hour from Caldara to discover their purpose, noting that the moredhel have been coming down from the north for the past year and have proved to be irritating neighbors. The party explains their mission to Elvandar and Gorath is irked when asked for a warrant of authority, but Udell reveals that they are surrounded by twenty of his heavily-armed colleagues. Reading Owyn's warrant, he amusedly notes that he believed their story from the beginning, as a moredhel would not be stupid enough to ride up in plain sight with bad intentions. He escorts them to Caldara to meet with King Dolgan, bringing them to the king's long hall and assuring them that his lads would care for their horses. Gorath, finding him to have been hospitable, asks his name, and he introduces himself before departing.[51]

Ulam

Ulam is a dough-faced woman who lives in Darkmoor. When the party first visits, she braces the door with her arm, glances nervously at Gorath, says she has had enough run-ins with strangers lately, and shuts the party out when they ask for some water. Later, Petrumh, an old friend whom Ulam calls "Pet," flees to her home when Malac's Cross is besieged by Pantathians; the party can visit to drop off Petrumh's Cask of Ale, but Ulam warns her not to let them into the house because "strangers are nothing but trouble."

V

Vabon

Vabon is a burly priest at the Temple of Dala. He assists the party when they arrive burdened by a heavy Bag of Grain and directs them to the private garden of the High Priestess.

W

Walter of Gyldenholt

Walter of Gyldenholt was once in service to the most loyal ally of Guy du Bas-Tyra. When the latter fell from grace, Walter spent years of hard service for the Border Barons and met James as a truculent captain under Baron Baldwin de la Troville at the Highcastle garrison during the Great Uprising.

Ten years later, Walter was the officer in charge of a company of fifty Royal Lancers dispatched to support Earl Richard of Romney during the guild troubles there, running the squad so as to be a model of efficiency. On the way, the company had some trouble with a band of Nighthawks, killing some of them before the rest escaped. On the road near Romney, James, waiting at a blockade, immediately recognized Walter, reintroduced himself, and observed that peacetime had been good for the former Highcastle captain. After deciding to headquarter at the Black Sheep Inn, the two met with Earl Richard, who addressed Walter first; the two discussed local moredhel and Nighthawk activity and the precarious guild situation, and Walter placed himself at the Earl's disposal, planning to speak to Romney's chief constable the next morning to establish a patrol and believing the increased military presence would soon return order to the city.

The following morning, Walter was found dead with some of his men in his upstairs room at the Black Sheep, having been murdered after drinking tainted wine in the massacre that slew the entire Royal Lancer company. The bodies of the victims were burned in the square, leaving the party to search for answers and the Earl, infuriated at the massacre, to finally demand order from the guilds on pain of their guildmasters' deaths.[52]

Watoom

Watoom is one of Pug's two Keshian students at the Academy of Magic, the other being Korsh. When discussing the Academy, Owyn warns Pug that the two are gathering followers and that their factions would need to be broken up to prevent nasty business in future. Pug admits that he is aware of the issue but is unsure what to do about it.[53]

Karl Widger

Karl Widger is a powerful sun-browned dockworker with a heavy chest and neck, wearing gloves and with his shirt sleeves rolled up. Left in charge of a blockade outside Romney while Michael Waylander took care of some business in town, and refused to let the party enter the city even though they bore Prince Arutha's warrants. After taking his name, James punched him in the stomach, kneed his face as he dropped like a brick, and stepped over him to demand an audience with Waylander. Though the precipitous attack bruised James's knee and nearly broke his hand, his request was granted.[54]

Flarr Wygn

Flarr Wygn, a small elderly man, lives in a house off the King's Highway south of Lyton. Its intricately carved door features magical symbols which he recounts having carved there with a hunting knife, disappointing Owyn Beleforte, who had hoped to meet another magician. While he has no magical gift, his brother, who died a couple of years ago, was a magician and left Flarr a magic well guarded by "a pretty nasty spell," which repels visitors with a hearty zap unless he deactivates it.

If the party approaches the well before visiting Flarr's house, its magical protection blocks them. If they visit it after meeting Flarr, he offers them a drink for 25 sovereigns, saying that it will fix them right up. Accepting restores them to full health, but does not actually deduct the fee, allowing the party to heal themselves for free any time they return.
