Shops are local retailers where goods are bought and sold in Betrayal at Krondor. Most cities and villages in the game have a shop or two, and occasional solitary shops can be found throughout the map.
Shops list a base price for each item they carry. The price of most items can be reduced slightly if the Haggling Skill of the purchasing party member is high enough. Prices can be affected by events taking place in the local area, such as the guild war in Romney.
While shops will purchase any item they already have on display, they also specialize in one or more categories of items and will purchase any item in their preferred categories. In contrast, small cottage industries, usually operated out of a home or workshop, have much smaller inventories and do not purchase items from the party.
