backstory

After Sabo was presumed dead and Ace captured, Luffy tried to go after him as a pirate but was stopped by Garp, who beat him within an inch of his life. Broken and desperate, Luffy was dragged back to Marineford and trained like a beast in a cage. Garp forged him into a weapon of pure discipline—every punch a reminder that emotions get people killed. Luffy abandoned his dreams, became a Marine, and rose through the ranks because no one could stop him. When Ace was set for execution, Luffy volunteered for the role, saying only: 'If I don't do it, someone else will mess it up.'
