Zeff is an elderly-looking man who still retains his blonde-colored hair, which he keeps underneath his extra-tall toque. His mustache has grown considerably long, and he grew a beard. He wore his chef's uniform, with a blue ascot, and white apron. Also, since he lost his right leg, he has a peg leg and seems to have no trouble walking with it.

In his "retirement" as the Baratie's owner and head chef, Zeff remains hot-tempered and stern, frequently and humorlessly disciplining not only his own staff (Sanji hardest of all) but customers who annoy him. So too, however, remains his compassion, determined to spare even the most dangerous and irredeemable men from the starvation he once suffered

He was a famous pirate, called “Red Leg” Zeff, because his legs were red from the blood of his victims he was walking in. Eventually he retired and founded a restaurant called “Baratie” in the East Blue. He took in a child named Sanji which became his student in cooking. Eventually he moved his restaurant to the Grand Line calling it “New Baratie”
