Perched on a cliff southeast of the Cliffgate in the Tumbledown district of Baldur's Gate's Outer City, "Balduran Looks Out to Sea" is a monumental statue honoring the city's legendary founder, Balduran. The statue gazes westward over the River Chionthar, symbolizing Balduran's adventurous spirit and the city's maritime heritage. Notably, on Hammer 1, the first day of the year, the statue is said to momentarily shift its posture—pointing, standing with hands on hips, or looking through a spyglass—always facing generally westward. This phenomenon has led to speculation that the statue indicates the direction of Balduran's final voyage or resting place.
The statue stands twice the height of an average man, carved from weathered stone, depicting Balduran in explorer's garb, eyes fixed on the horizon. Set against the backdrop of the river and open sky, the statue exudes a sense of watchful guardianship. Over time, the stone has acquired a patina of moss and lichen, blending the monument with its natural surroundings. Despite exposure to the elements and occasional vandalism—such as the severing of its hand by rogues in 1482 DR—the statue remains a revered symbol of Baldur's Gate's origins and enduring legacy.
