G. High Rock

Overview

High Rock is the mountainous western region of Tamriel surrounding the Iliac Bay and the ancient Adamantine Tower. During the Late Merethic Era, it is not divided into the later Breton kingdoms. Instead, the region contains Direnni territories, Nedic communities, emerging mixed populations, Orsimer strongholds, Goblin lands, and independent settlements.

The region is politically fragmented but economically important because of its coasts, mountain passes, fertile valleys, and maritime routes.

The Direnni

The Direnni are one of the strongest Merish powers in High Rock.

Their influence is centered on Balfiera and Adamantine Tower, but their estates and political relationships extend farther across the region.

Direnni power depends on landholding, trade, magic, alliances, and control of important settlements rather than complete direct rule over every valley.

Their contact with local Nedic populations is already producing mixed communities that will later contribute to Breton identity.

Nedic and Mixed Populations

Humans have lived in High Rock for generations.

Some communities remain independent, while others live under Direnni rule as tenants, soldiers, laborers, servants, or local clients.

Intermarriage and cultural exchange are increasingly common in some regions.

These populations should not yet be called fully developed Bretons. Their identities remain local and mixed, shaped by both Nedic and Aldmeri influence.

Mountains and Strongholds

High Rock's mountains divide the region into many local territories.

Orsimer clans occupy strongholds, passes, mines, and defensible valleys, while Goblin communities hold caves, uplands, and isolated settlements.

These peoples may trade with Direnni or Nedic neighbors, serve as mercenaries, or fight over land and resources.

Control of mountain passes is especially valuable because they connect otherwise isolated areas.

Settlements and Trade

High Rock contains coastal ports, farming villages, fortified estates, hill settlements, mines, and mixed market towns.

The Iliac coast connects the region to Summerset, western Tamriel, and the Abecean Sea.

Trade moves food, ore, metalwork, timber, textiles, magical goods, and luxury items through the region.

This economic contact also spreads language, religion, and political influence.

Adamantine Tower

Adamantine Tower is the oldest known Tower in Tamriel and one of the most important sacred sites in the world.

Its association with Convention gives the Direnni enormous prestige.

The Tower's presence makes High Rock significant far beyond its political size, attracting scholars, priests, rulers, and travelers interested in the oldest history of Mundus.

High Rock in the Age of Myth

During the Late Merethic Era, High Rock is a mixed frontier of Merish power and human settlement rather than a Breton kingdom.
