Tamriel: Origins

G
Gangnamstein22

Wage war, forge empires, and uncover the secrets of the Elves who first shaped Tamriel’s fate.

Author's Note: Welcome to Tamriel: Origins, a deep-time Elder Scrolls campaign set long before the Empire, before the Septims, and even before written history. This world is rooted in the Middle to Late Merethic Era, a time of mythic wars, divine architecture, and rising Elven empires. In this setting, the Ayleids, Chimer, Dwemer, Falmer, Maormer, and more vie for power across a still-young Tamriel. Great Towers are constructed to shape reality. Daedric cults walk openly among mortal races. And the borders between gods and kings blur with every passing century. This campaign is built on strictly canonical Elder Scrolls lore, reconstructed from in-game texts like Before the Ages of Man, The Annotated Anuad, and The Monomyth. Some areas from later eras have been rewritten to reflect their ancient origins—or replaced entirely. Explore vast wildernesses, witness the founding of civilizations, and decide which myths survive into legend.

Garlas Malatar: Arcane Library

Garlas Malatar: Arcane Library

A short hallway from the main stair opens into a high-vaulted chamber lined with tiered stone bookshelves. Each shelf holds clay tablets, thin gold-leaf folios, and crystal cylinders that glow faintly with stored spells. Waist-high Welkynd pedestals cast cool blue light, while a single Varla Stone lantern at the center bathes the room in steady radiance. A massive circular table of white-gold stone dominates the floor, its surface etched with a map of Nibenay trade routes. Three Ayleid scribes in moon-white robes copy records onto fresh crystal sheets, their quills dipped in luminous blue ink. Chief archivist Lliandel oversees the work, his amber eyes narrowing whenever footsteps echo. Two unarmed Nedic attendants—marked by bronze collars—fetch tablets and polish the shelves; one, Dara of the River, secretly memorizes route lists for smugglers. At the rear, a locked iron coffer bears Meridia’s starburst seal; rumor says it contains a treaty with Delodiil.

Garlas Malatar: Beacon Watchtower

Garlas Malatar: Beacon Watchtower

Perched on a wind-blasted promontory east of the main gate, this squat, circular tower of white-gold stone overlooks Topal Bay. A spiraling stair hugs the inner wall, rising past arrow-slit windows to a crenellated roof where an Ayleid beacon casts steady azure light that guides allied vessels and blinds nocturnal raiders. The ground floor stores javelins, spare bow-strings, and sealed jars of lamp-oil; a side alcove houses a hand-cranked mirror array that can flash coded signals toward the city ramparts.

Garlas Malatar: Cliffside Smuggler Caves

Garlas Malatar: Cliffside Smuggler Caves

Hidden by spray and kelp-draped boulders a quarter-mile south of the dockyards, Smuggler Caves are a network of twisting limestone tunnels lit by scavenged Welkynd shards. Brackish pools lap at barnacled steps, where crates of moon-sugar, Khajiiti silks, and chipped varla-glass tiles lie stacked on driftwood pallets. A rope-and-pulley lift ascends to the warehouse floor above, suggesting nightly use. The deeper vault serves as a rendezvous point, with twin braziers burning hackalo incense and Baandari charms jingling from repurposed mast-timbers. Smuggler-Chief Rhasa’do negotiates with Baandari Seer Yashira over a wrapped Elder-scroll-fragment, while cutthroats lounge nearby, and a chained Nedic porter awaits rescue.

Garlas Malatar: Coastal Dockyards

Garlas Malatar: Coastal Dockyards

Garlas Malatar is a bustling coastal dockyard where stone quays lined with pale Ayleid marble meet the jagged shoreline. The harbor is illuminated by flickering Welkynd lanterns at dusk, and three sleek dawn-prowed barges are sheltered by a half-moon breakwater, ferrying tribute and pilgrims. The area is alive with the sounds of sailors unloading casks of Niben wine and luminous varla-glass tiles, while a timber-roofed warehouse, marked with Meridia’s glyph, stores various goods including salted riverfish and a legendary locked iron coffer rumored to contain the 'Star-Chart'. The harbormaster, Ararel, oversees operations while dealing with the threat of skooma smugglers, and whispers of secret passages beneath the warehouse add an air of intrigue for adventurers.

Garlas Malatar: Coastway Caravan Rest

Garlas Malatar: Coastway Caravan Rest

A vibrant encampment of Baandari traders, Garlas Malatar features a semicircle of colorful wagons and hide-tents perched on a dune overlooking the Ayleid sea-road. Lanterns filled with fire-salts illuminate the area, where crates of silk, moon-sugar, and river pearls are stacked beside a driftwood cooking fire. A rickety palisade of ship planks protects against curious nix-hounds, while a banner of Baan Dar flutters in the breeze. Travelers leave offerings at a rough altar dedicated to Mara, seeking safe passage. NPC's should direct players to nearby POI's.

Garlas Malatar: Market Arcades

Garlas Malatar: Market Arcades

The Market Arcades of Garlas Malatar are a bustling heart of commerce nestled against the base of towering palace structures. Long colonnades of white-gold stone arc over narrow, cobbled streets where traders from across Tamriel gather. Shops offer a variety of wares, from enchanted trinkets to rare spices, all under the calming light of floating Welkynd stones. The central fountain, adorned with Meridia’s comet sigil, serves as a social hub for traders. Despite its vibrant atmosphere, whispers of hidden treasures and clandestine dealings linger in the air, making it a place of intrigue.

Garlas Malatar: Meridian Chapel

Garlas Malatar: Meridian Chapel

Sun‑struck oculus crowns an octagonal hall of white‑gold stone; dawnlight ignites the crystal idol of the Deadric God, Meridia, at the center. Wall reliefs of winged Aedra frame seven shrine niches. Six glow with Welkynd lanterns; the seventh stands dark—their “Starlit Lamp” was stolen last tenday. Silken runners lead to silver oil‑basins; air carries warm jasmine. Behind the idol, a curtained arch hides priests’ cells; a bronze side door returns to public corridors. A chest of eclipse‑candles rests in a western alcove—its rose‑gold lock matches acolyte Calandil’s sunburst amulet. High Priestess Aeredhel (golden‑robed) offers blessings—and a rich reward—for the lamp’s return. Sentinel Thalerion grips a glass‑edged spear, watching all who linger. Acolyte Sorya polishes floor mosaics; Calandil avoids questions about his matching key. Nedic servant Liora, scrubbing tiles, pauses near a faint crack behind the east panel, glancing at visitors as though begging them to notice a hidden way.

Garlas Malatar: Royal Reliquary

Garlas Malatar: Royal Reliquary

A narrow stair behind the throne descends into a circular chamber half lit by pools of turquoise glow issuing from twenty-four uncut Welkynd stones set in floor recesses. Their light ripples across walls of white-gold stone carved with Meridia’s comet sigil. Four alcoves hold freestanding marble obelisks; each obelisk supports an artefact beneath a thin stasis field of shimmering air. The western alcove displays a leaf-bladed moonstone sword; the northern, a gilded coffer inlaid with opal scales; the eastern, a crystal vial sealed with amber sap; the southern, an empty setting ringed with faint dust, recently robbed. Two Meridian Guardians patrol clockwise, their bronze boots echoing softly. Ayleid Curatrix Eleneth kneels at a low altar, chanting to renew protective wards; silver keys hang at her belt. A shackled Nedic porter strains to polish the obelisks; bruises on his wrists show recent punishment. An iron-bound chest for offerings stands ajar.

Garlas Malatar: Slave Barracks

Garlas Malatar: Slave Barracks

Below the main promenade, a narrow stair of pale stone descends to a broad, rectangular chamber whose walls bear only faint starburst etchings—here beauty was not a priority. Faint azure light seeps from fist‑sized Welkynd sconces, revealing fifty simple reed‑woven pallets arranged in regimented rows upon the cold floor. A sour mix of damp straw and overworked bodies lingers in the still air. Iron rings are set into the walls at regular intervals; many hold slack chains, others lie ominously empty. At the far end stands a gated alcove containing two water jars and a cauldron for thin porridge, tended by an elderly Nedic cook named Varan of the Mists, who quietly shares news among captives. A stern Ayleid overseer, Falionil, paces the aisle with a light‑imbued rod that stings on contact. Four shackled Beastfolk—two Cat‑Men from the south and two lizardlike Saxhleel—sit apart, whispering in their own tongues and eyeing escape routes. Crates of barley and dried fish line the rear wall.

Garlas Malatar: Sunfire Oculus

Garlas Malatar: Sunfire Oculus

Rising above the palace’s western flank, the Sunfire Oculus is a domed observatory of white-gold latticework and varla-glass panels tinted amber, blue, and rose. A spiraling staircase hugs its inner wall, leading to a wide circular platform beneath the dome’s apex, where the celestial lens—a massive polished mirror inlaid with Welkynd veins—sits suspended by bronze arms. During dawn and dusk, refracted sunlight spills in radiant patterns across the inlaid floor, designed to align with the constellations of the Ayleid sky-codex. High Astrologer Calithiel traces planetary motions upon a crystal slab, flanked by Apprentice Merion who sketches charts with luminous ink. An arcane pedestal set against the wall glows with stored prophecies, while two bronze-bound codices lie open nearby. A curtained alcove holds a broken tripod mount, sparking debate over sabotage. Dusty scrolls line an upper shelf—some detail lunar cycles, others hint at “The Starlit Lamp’s” lost alignment.

Garlas Malatar: Throne Room

Garlas Malatar: Throne Room

The heart of the palace is a wide oval chamber built from flawless white-gold stone. A shallow barrel-vault spans overhead, its ribs set with narrow seams of Welkynd crystal that glow a steady sky-blue, while two high clerestory slits admit the red-gold light of sunset and dawn. Six slim columns of polished meteoric glass divide a central promenade from quiet side aisles. At the far end, Narilmor’s throne—carved from the same stone as the walls, accented by inset Varla stones—rests on a three-step dais. Two Meridian Guardians in mirror-bright bronze cuirasses flank the throne, spears crossed. A Nedic attendant kneels beside a low brazier, replenishing aromatic resins. In the east aisle a robed Ayleid scribe records petitions on moon-calf parchment; an unlocked stone coffer of scrolls sits at his feet. Opposite, a sealed white-gold chest (Varla lock intact) awaits tribute. Large double doors lead south toward reception halls; a smaller arch behind the throne descends to the Reliquary.

Garlas Malatar: Tide-Crystal Jetty

Garlas Malatar: Tide-Crystal Jetty

A narrow pier of gleaming white-gold blocks extends into the shallow bay south of the city walls, culminating in a hexagonal platform adorned with luminous blue Welkynd crystals. The quay is lined with rope bollards and carved dolphin reliefs, where trading skiffs off-load river fish, amberglass, and Nedic timber. A customs kiosk, a tumbled arch with a marble desk, houses ledgers and wax seals, while crates of dried eel and clay amphorae of lamp-oil clutter the platform. Two barnacle-flecked rowboats bob below on hemp lines, and the air is thick with the scent of the sea and trade.

Garlas Malatar: Welkynd Forge

Garlas Malatar: Welkynd Forge

South of the reliquary, a sloping corridor opens into a low, hexagonal hall alive with aquamarine light. At its heart, a waist-high jade basin brims with raw meteoric glass fragments that sparkle like submerged stars; a gentle hum rises as latent magicka gathers. Stone benches encircle the basin, cluttered with chisels of meteoric iron, lacquered mallets, and half-cut Welkynd shards. Master Stonewright Therelion guides two elven apprentices who turn shards on pedestals, smoothing facets with whispered spells. Nearby, three exhausted Nedic labourers sort ore into wicker trays, chains ankle-linked, guarded by a single Meridian Guardian armed with a moonstone mace. A lidded bronze urn stores finished stones; a smaller iron coffer holds defective pieces slated for disposal. Visible hooks include a cracked crate revealing contraband Welkynd, a clouded stone hinting at volatile enchantment, and a dusty hatch behind stacked ore baskets bearing a forgotten seal of Nenalata.

Garlas Malatar: Welkynd Vault

Garlas Malatar: Welkynd Vault

Beyond a bronze-shod gate lies a circular chamber sunk one level below the main halls. Seven shallow alcoves ring the room; within each, a waist-high plinth supports a watermelon-sized Welkynd Stone whose pale light paints the white-gold walls in shimmering aquamarine. The floor is a sun-burst mosaic of slate and mother-of-pearl that channels spilled magicka into narrow runnels, preventing overload. A lattice of fine silver mesh—hardly visible—arches overhead to damp stray energies, crackling faintly whenever a stone flares. Two Ayleid custodians in simple ivory tunics make slow circuits, adjusting the stones’ facets with glass-tipped rods. Custodian Arcalmo records brightness levels on a bone ledger, while his junior, Silirel, replaces cracked facets from a nearby tool chest. An armed sentinel, Varonus the Quiet, stands near the entrance with a spear and shield, eyes alert for thieves. Crouched in a shadowed corner on cleaning duty, a Nedic bondsman.
