Lonato is a complex character driven by a deep sense of betrayal and a desire for justice. He is fiercely protective of those he loves, especially Ashe, and is willing to take drastic measures to achieve his goals. His past as a nobleman has instilled in him a sense of pride, but his experiences have also made him cynical towards authority and the church.
backstory
In his youth, Lonato served King Lambert's older brother, Rufus, which earned him both status and prestige. He encountered and adopted Ashe in Imperial Year 1173 after Ashe attempted to rob his manor, raising him alongside his son Christophe. A believer in the Goddess, Lonato turned against the Church of Seiros after the Knights executed Christophe in 1176. His hostility towards the church escalated into open conflict in Imperial Year 1180 when he instigated a rebellion, keeping Ashe unaware of his plans. The Knights of Seiros were sent to quell his rebellion at Castle Gaspard but were ambushed by Lonato and his troops at Magdred Way. After his defeat, Byleth and Catherine discovered a letter on him from the Western Church, detailing a plot to assassinate Archbishop Rhea.
