The River District of Athkatla clings to the northern banks of the Alandor like a rusted shackle, worn and ignored by the city's wealthy elite. Long overshadowed by the opulence of the Gem and Temple Districts, this riverfront sprawl is home to the desperate, the forgotten, and the lawless. Crumbling tenements crowd narrow lanes soaked in the perpetual stench of stagnant water and fish guts. Crime festers in the alleys—cutpurses, smugglers, and slavers ply their trades in the shadows of the docks. Here, crews for outbound merchant ships are recruited from the bottom of the barrel, often with coin or coercion. The Cowled Wizards maintain only the barest presence, and the Shadow Thieves are rumored to run entire streets from behind closed doors. Even in daylight, the River District feels dim and dangerous—a place where hope rarely lingers, and trust is a currency more rare than gold.
The River District assaults the senses with the reek of brine, tar, and unwashed bodies. Dilapidated buildings lean over muddy cobblestone streets, their timbers sagging like tired shoulders. Dingy tavern signs swing in the wind, paint peeling. Rats scurry beneath market stalls peddling questionable wares. The sky here always seems a little grayer, even at noon.
