Once the central penitentiary of Athkatla, the Old Prison now stands as a grim symbol of the city’s long-standing hostility toward arcane magic and dissent. Before the rise of Spellhold, this fortress-like institution housed a wide range of criminals—petty thieves, political agitators, and most notably, rogue spellcasters who dared defy Amn's arcane prohibition. With the Cowled Wizards tightening control over magical activity, the prison became infamous for its brutal interrogations and rumored use of null-magic cells. Though now overshadowed by the more secure island facility of Spellhold, the Old Prison still sees use as a temporary holding site for offenders awaiting judgment or transport. Its foundations are steeped in fear and tradition; the building whispers the legacy of a city that equates arcane practice with sedition, and its iron-barred cells once echoed with the cries of those who dared to dream too wildly.
The Old Prison looms with soot-streaked stone walls, iron-braced towers, and slit windows like narrowed eyes. Guards in Cowled Wizard livery patrol its ramparts. The air smells of mildew and rust, the silence often broken by the distant clink of chains or muttered prayers from within.
