The Frost Signal is a buried Arcane Brotherhood research station hidden beneath a dead glacier shelf at the edge of the Smokeholes in the High Ice. Originally established by Overwizard Druette of the North, it began as an arcane listening post to monitor magical echoes left by Netherese wards and elemental rifts. Over time, it grew into a full-fledged laboratory studying planar bleed-through from the Caverns of Burning Ice and anomalies in time-stalled terrain. Here, Brotherhood mages conduct reckless experiments with chronomancy, icebound necromancy, and elemental inversion, using enslaved yeti and duped snow elf guides. Despite the station's secrecy, its arcane pulses—known as “Frost Signals”—have begun disrupting ley lines as far south as Ten Towns. These magical pulses may be accidental—or intentional calls to something sealed deep beneath the High Ice that even the Brotherhood cannot fully understand.
The entrance to the Frost Signal lies behind a curtain of razor-edged icicles in a wind-scoured crevasse, its presence masked by runes that reflect not just light, but sound and memory. Once revealed, a spiral stair descends into the glacier’s core—past frozen columns and half-fossilized beasts trapped mid-snarl in the ice. The complex is carved from a single mass of magically reinforced permafrost, its walls shimmering with soft internal light like moonlight through quartz. Thin bridges span yawning chasms of magical dark-ice, and vault doors open to circular chambers where sorcerers hover around elemental cores pulsing with blue flame. The Heart Room houses a colossal orb of suspended glacial water shot through with glowing glyphs, each turn of its surface releasing an echo that ripples across planes. Gravity wavers in certain rooms, and time bends subtly—visitors sometimes age a day in an hour, or forget why they entered.
