The Black Frog Tavern is a cramped but well-frequented establishment nestled off a crooked alley in Athkatla’s Trade District. Favored by dockhands, caravan guards, and merchants too frugal—or too paranoid—for the glittering halls of Waukeen’s Promenade, the tavern thrives on grit, gossip, and guarded deals. The tavern is notorious for its no-questions-asked policy and discreet backroom rentals, making it a popular haunt for off-duty mercenaries and traveling adventurers. While the ale is passable and the stew suspiciously thick, the real draw is the overheard whispers: news of shifting merchant alliances, auction house scams, and which caravans are worth robbing or guarding. Despite its grimy reputation, the Black Frog remains free of major bloodshed—likely because someone is being paid to keep it that way.
The building slouches under its own weight, leaning slightly toward the alley like it's eavesdropping on passersby. Its sign—an oversized, moss-colored frog nailed to a warped beam—creaks overhead. The inside is low-lit and pungent, with warped floorboards, a permanently sticky bar, and walls stained with decades of pipe smoke. Cracked mugs and mismatched tables give the place a lopsided charm, while faded banners from long-forgotten mercenary companies hang overhead. A curtained archway at the back leads to private booths, and there’s always a bouncer stationed near the door, though their employer is unclear.
