A clandestine, passionless affair with the singer Clara LaGuerta became his main bad event—not for the act itself, but for the liability her resulting pregnancy created. To protect the reputation he had meticulously built, he coldly and cruelly cast her aside, denying her and their child to preserve his image as an unimpeachable agent of civilization.
