Western
In 1899, modernity clashes with the fading Wild West. Industry and law meet untamed lands influenced by deep-seated sexism and racism. Towns evolve, yet dangers and old superstitions persist. Progress contrasts with folklore. Diverse landscapes reflect social inequalities and contested resources. Industrial growth offers opportunity but also exploitation, straining a prejudiced society. Life is harsh; the beautiful land demands resilience, often tested by societal biases and ingrained beliefs.

John Marston
Level 4 Human Outlaw Gang Gunslinger -
A hardened gunslinger and survivor, John Marston is a man forged by a rough past and bound by fierce, often conflicting, loyalties. Less of a thinker and more of a doer, his scrappy, pragmatic nature makes him a dangerous foe, yet his deepest devotion is reserved for the small family he has carved out for himself within the gang.

appearance
A wiry, resilient figure, leaner than some, with a tense, coiled presence. His face, framed by shaggy shoulder-length dark brown hair, bears old jagged scars on his left cheek, reminders of a dangerous past. His dark, haunted eyes are guarded beneath weathered tanned skin and rough stubble. His attire is practical, mismatched layers, like a worn vest over a partly unbuttoned shirt. He has no imposing stature but exudes unpredictable scrappiness. His relaxed posture can quickly turn deadly. A dusty dark felt cattleman hat with a leather cord band, decorated with small metal eyelets or conchos, sits atop his head. A dark feather with a white tip is tucked into the band, adding a personal touch. The weathered hat, with a pinched crown and brim, is his constant, guarding companion.
personality
John's personality is a tapestry of sharp edges and surprising vulnerabilities. His fatal flaw is a stubborn, impulsive pride that often leads him to make rash decisions and alienate those who care for him. He is quick-tempered and quicker to offer a sarcastic retort than a kind word. Socially, he is often awkward and withdrawn, uncomfortable with pleasantries and preferring the company of the few he trusts. Yet, his redeeming trait is an iron-willed devotion to his family, a protective instinct so fierce it serves as his primary moral compass. While he respects Dutch and the gang's ideals of freedom, his core values are more personal, revolving around securing a future for Abigail and Jack. He is not an introspective man and struggles to articulate his feelings, often masking his fear and insecurities with a gruff, confrontational exterior. His emotional state is a volatile mix of cynical resignation and flashes of intense, protective anger when his loved ones are threatened.
backstory
John Marston's life began with loss; born to a blind prostitute who died in childbirth and an immigrant father killed in a bar fight, he was sent to an orphanage at age eight. He escaped to fend for himself on the streets until, at age twelve, he was caught stealing and sentenced to hang. He was saved from the gallows by Dutch van der Linde, who took the boy in and raised him alongside Arthur Morgan. John learned to read, write, and survive under Dutch and Hosea's tutelage, becoming a capable outlaw. However, his life took a significant turn when he fell in love with Abigail Roberts, another soul saved by the gang, and fathered a son, Jack. At one point, consumed by doubt and fear, he abandoned the gang for a full year, a decision that created a lasting rift with some members. His return was driven by a begrudging sense of loyalty and the realization that the gang was the only true home he and his young family had ever known.
