Arthur Morgan was born around 1863 in the northern United States to Beatrice and Lyle Morgan. His mother died in his childhood, and after his father's arrest, he was taken off the streets by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews, becoming a founding member of the Van der Linde gang. Arthur fell in love with Mary Gillis, but their engagement ended due to his criminal lifestyle. He developed a brotherly bond with John Marston after saving him from lynching. Arthur participated in a significant bank robbery in 1887, distributing some of the stolen money to the needy. He later had a brief relationship with Eliza, who was killed along with their son in a robbery for $10, deepening his cynicism about crime. Abigail Roberts joined the gang, and after having a son with John Marston, Arthur felt a growing rift with John due to his abandonment.
