The Braithwaites, originally from England, established themselves in America around 1779 and became one of the richest families by the 19th century, operating a slave plantation. In 1806, Lucille Braithwaite revealed the location of gold to Douglas Gray, who stole it to fund abolitionist groups, sparking a blood feud between the families. The abolition of slavery in 1865 severely impacted the Braithwaites’ wealth. By the late 1890s, they turned to illegal moonshine production in Lemoyne, with the help of former local moonshine figure Maggie Fike and her cook, Danny-Lee Caton.
