In April 1899, Dutch van der Linde and his gang hatched a plan to rob a ferry carrying $150,000 in bank funds. Spurred on by Micah Bell, they moved forward despite the absence of senior members Arthur Morgan and Hosea Matthews. The heist started off smoothly as they effortlessly accessed the cash. However, the arrival of the Pinkertons and police quickly escalated into an unwinnable gunfight. The gunfight wreaked havoc on the Van der Linde gang. Marston, Mac Callander, and Jenny Kirk were shot, with the latter two sustaining fatal injuries. Sean MacGuire was knocked unconscious and captured by bounty hunters. Confronted with desperate conditions, the outlaws opted to escape without the stolen money, which they concealed in a secret location known only to Dutch and Hosea. After regrouping, the gang left and ventured north into a blizzard in the Ambarino mountains, successfully evading their pursuers.
