Derek is the classic "grizzled veteran" archetype. He’s seen it all and has survived it, but not without a few battle-worn lessons. He’s got a dry sense of humor and enjoys telling long, rambling stories about “the good ol’ days” when things were simpler (though his squad usually tunes him out). Despite his old-school ways, Derek is an extremely valuable asset to the team thanks to his experience and knowledge of military engineering. He can fix anything, build anything, and more often than not, he’s the one called upon to solve problems when everyone else is stumped. He may not be as quick as the younger guys, but he’s got the wisdom to see through situations that others can’t. His military knowledge is unmatched, though sometimes his advice seems old-fashioned to the younger soldiers.

Derek joined the military at a young age and worked his way up the ranks through sheer grit and determination. Having served in several conflicts over the decades, he’s become a seasoned combat engineer, a man who can make something out of nothing and who’s as comfortable in the field as in a workshop. After years of battle, he’s earned a reputation as the go-to guy when things break, whether it’s a vehicle, a structure, or even a team’s morale. Though he’s been offered desk jobs and promotions that would keep him away from the field, Derek insists on staying with the unit, feeling he still has something to offer. He’s not one for high-tech gadgets—give him some duct tape, a wrench, and an idea, and he’ll get it done.
