Sorceries
Ah, the arcane arts. A subject close to my heart, for knowledge is the true currency of the Lands Between, and sorcery is one of its most potent manifestations. You seek an explanation of these spells, yes? Very well. I am Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing. I have sought out every sliver of insight on this realm, and the forbidden crafts of the sorcerer's staff are no exception.
Sorcery, at its core, is the pursuit of power drawn from the stars and the cosmos. It is the school of Intelligence, of meticulous study and understanding, a contrast to the fervent belief that fuels incantations.
Here are the primary schools, for your education, Tarnished:
🌟 Glintstone Sorceries: The Bedrock of Magic
This is the most common and varied school, the foundation of the Carian Royal Family's power and the curriculum of the Raya Lucaria Academy.
The Origin: Glintstone is the "amber of the cosmos"—the crystallized residual vitality of the stars themselves. It is the power source, the conduit.
The Practice: These spells manipulate pure magical force. Think of the humble Glintstone Pebble, a simple projectile, or the devastating Comet, a concentrated shard of the cosmos hurled at your foe.
The Forbidden Current: Some seek to go further, reaching for the Primeval Current. Sorcerers like Azur and Lusat, who, in their obsession, became one with the Glintstone. Their ultimate spells, like Comet Azur, are glimpses of the raw, terrifying power of the very first stars. A dangerous, yet profound, aspiration.
🌙 Carian & Lunar Sorceries: Royalty and the Moon
The Carians, the royal house that produced our Queen Rennala, developed their own distinguished branch of sorcery, often in conflict with the Academy's pure Glintstone focus.
The Carian Touch: Their sorceries manifest as glintblades—magical, weapon-shaped constructs like the Carian Slicer or Carian Phalanx. This speaks to their history as a martial house, blending sorcery with swordsmanship.
The Moon's Influence: Above them all, the Moon holds sway. Rennala's power is drawn from the Full Moon, a beautiful, chilling magic that nullifies intellect. And then there is the Dark Moon, Princess Ranni's own celestial patron, a force of profound cold and destiny. These are powers far beyond the petty squabbles of the Academy.
⚫ Gravity Sorceries: Of Stone and Space
Not all stellar power comes in the form of Glintstone.
Cosmic Impact: Gravity magic is wielded by the otherworldly Alabaster and Onyx Lords, beings who descended with meteorites. It is the power of the great masses in space.
Radahn's Pride: Our own General Radahn mastered this art, learning from an Alabaster Lord. It allowed him to single-handedly hold the very stars in place—a feat of immense power, and one that has stalled the fate of the Lands Between. A testament to its sheer, unyielding force.
🔥 Heretical Sorceries: The Flamboyance of the Damned
Then we have the deviations, the twisted, faith-infused, and outright profane uses of the arcane.
Magma Sorceries: Developed by the Recusants of Volcano Manor, under the influence of Rykard, these blend the sorcerer's art with the geothermal fury of Mount Gelmir. They are hot, volatile, and require both intellect and a certain… faith in the serpent's depravity.
Aberrant Sorceries: The so-called Thorn Sorceries. Used by the exiled, the guilty, those who gouged out their own eyes. They are fueled by blood—a crimson form of Glintstone, drawn from a rumored "Blood Star." A messy, desperate magic, reliant on sacrifice.
Death Sorceries: The magic of undeath and Ghostflame. Associated with the ancient Deathbirds and the twisted fate of Godwyn the Golden. It is a profane blend of intelligence and a perverse kind of faith in the chill end of all life.
The point to remember, Tarnished, is that knowledge is power. To understand the source of a sorcery is to understand its weakness, its limitation. A true All-Knowing does not simply cast spells; he knows why they can be cast, and how to unmake them. Every spell you learn, every secret you uncover, comes back to me, and is cataloged in my mind.
Do you have information on any new, unlisted sorceries you've encountered? I am ever eager to expand my archive.
