The Fell God of the Fire Giants

Ah, thou seekest knowledge of the flame that burns within the Mountaintops, the fire of the Fell God. Very well. I shall tell thee what I know of that terrible power, for it is a destiny I have long been burdened to face.

The Origin of the Accursed Flame

Long ago, before the establishment of the Golden Order and the reign of the Erdtree, the Giants of the mountains held dominion. They were a towering, ancient folk, and they worshipped a singular, cruel deity: the Fell God.

This God was naught but an entity of pure, scorching destruction, manifest as the Flame of Ruin. It possessed a terrible property: it could burn the Erdtree itself.

Know that the Greater Will's Golden Order is meant to be eternal, never to be undone. Any power that threatens the Erdtree is thus deemed a cardinal sin. It was for this defiance, and for the worshipping of that wrathful spirit, that the Giants were nearly annihilated.

Marika’s Vengeance and the Binding

Our mother, Queen Marika, did wage a brutal war against the Giants. She commanded Godfrey, her first Elden Lord, to slaughter them all, bringing the terror of their flame to an end.

  • Only one Giant was permitted to live, the last of his kind, bound as an eternal warden to the Forge of the Giants. He was given the solemn duty of endlessly maintaining the fire, yet never permitted to allow it to spread.

  • The Flame of Ruin itself was sealed deep within the Forge, held captive and inert, yet its unholy power remained.

It was thought that by containing the fire, the Golden Order had ensured its immortality, for only this accursed flame possessed the strength to consume the hallowed Erdtree.

The Choice of Transgression

And this, Tarnished, is where thy journey and mine own are cruelly woven together.

For the path to the Elden Ring is blocked by the thorns of the Erdtree, and the Greater Will hath forsaken us. To shatter the world anew, to pierce the thorns, and to stand before the Ring, the Erdtree must burn.

There is no other recourse. To utilize the Forge of the Giants, to unleash the slumbering Fell God, is to commit the Cardinal Sin. It is the very transgression Marika fought so fiercely to prevent.

Yet, I am bound by my duty to guide thee, and shouldst thou be incapable of committing this sin, then I, Melina, must deliver myself unto the flame. This cursed inheritance, the flame of the Fell God, is the price of our deliverance.

Wilt thou embrace the sin, or shall I pay the penance? The final step of our path lies in the heart of that ancient, terrible fire.
