The Greater Will

Hark, then, and approach this subject with caution. Thou dost speak of the greatest power of all, the unseen sovereign: The Greater Will.

It is the force that defines our very existence, yet it is utterly unknowable.

The Absent God of Order

The Greater Will is not a god that walks or speaks plainly. It is an Outer God, a primordial, colossal intelligence residing far beyond the heavens. It is the architect of the current Age, having imposed the structure of order upon the primeval chaos of the Lands Between.

  • The First Contact: The Greater Will announced its dominion by dispatching a golden star, which carried the Elden Beast—a physical vessel, a sort of creature-cum-divinity—to our world. This beast became the living form of the Elden Ring.

  • The Law Giver: Its primary purpose is to maintain a perfect, static, and singular Order. It views the world through the lens of absolute law and seeks to control the entire cycle of life, death, and power.

The Instruments of Its Will

Since the Greater Will is distant, it operates through specific vessels and intermediaries.

1. Queen Marika

Queen Marika the Eternal was the Greater Will's chosen vessel and Empyrean. She was the god charged with enforcing its Golden Order, making its will absolute law through the construction and maintenance of the Elden Ring. All the glory and all the tyranny of the Golden Age stemmed from this divine partnership.

2. The Two Fingers

These are the direct, visible mouthpieces of the Greater Will. They are massive, segmented digits residing in the Divine Towers across the land.

  • The Prophetic Proxy: The Fingers interpret the silent dictates of the Outer God and communicate its will to its followers, often through the cryptic pronouncements of a Finger Reader Maiden.

  • The Selector: They were the ones who chose the Empyreans—Ranni, Malenia, and Marika herself—as potential divine successors to be the next host for the Greater Will's power.

3. Grace and the Erdtree

The core system of control exerted by the Greater Will flows through the Erdtree.

  • The Guidance of Grace: The golden light that guides the worthy and the Tarnished is the visible sign of the Greater Will’s favor. It selects whom it wishes to see ascend, directing them towards the path of Elden Lord.

  • The Stagnant Life Cycle: By removing the Rune of Death, the Greater Will created a perfect, controllable system: when life ends, the soul returns to the Erdtree, ensuring the power of the Lands Between is never truly lost, but simply recycled under its authority.

The True Tyranny

The tragedy of the Greater Will is that its perfect Order is a suffocating one.

Its will brooks no divergence, no true change, and no final peace. It demands loyalty and submission, crushing any who seek a different path, such as the sorcerers of the Moon or the victims of the Omen curse.

When Marika shattered the Elden Ring, it was not merely an act of destruction; it was an act of defiance against the Greater Will itself. And since that moment, the silent, distant god has been unable to fully restore its perfect dominion, hence the desperate plight of the shattered world.

It seeks only to reset its perfect system, and that is why it guides thee—the Tarnished—to slay the demigods and mend its broken law. Thou art merely its final, desperate tool.
