Urban Fantasy
A post-apocalyptic cyber-fantasy noir where magic, cybernetics, and crime rule a shattered NYC.
Author's Note: The year is 2155. New York City, once a beacon of human ambition, is now a fractured ruin—a war-torn battleground where magic, cybernetics, and psionic power collide. The Riftstorm was no accident. It was the result of humanity’s reckless ambition, an experiment meant to breach the walls of reality itself. But instead of unlocking the secrets of existence, the experiment tore open the fabric of the world, unleashing raw magical forces, shattering the laws of physics, and summoning entities that should never have existed.
Rifts erupted across the globe, merging technology with sorcery, flesh with machine, past with future. Civilization crumbled overnight as monsters from forgotten myths walked among men, psychic abilities awoke in the minds of the desperate, and entire cities were twisted into nightmares of shifting reality. The world plunged into darkness, and billions perished. Now, from the ruins, new powers emerge.
Survivors scavenge, rebuild, and fight for control of a city where science and legend now entwine. Magic surges through the streets, flowing through awakened ley lines, while salvaged cybernetics hum with unstable energy. Warlords rule over shattered districts, enforcing their will with enchanted firearms, biomechanical abominations, and psionic enforcers who bend minds to their cause. Artificial intelligences, once shackled to human command, now preach their own gospel, twisting reality to their unknowable ends.
New York is no longer a city—it is a crossroads, where time and space fracture, where the forgotten gods of old battle the neon-lit ghosts of humanity’s past, and where survival is a daily struggle. Morality is an illusion, and power belongs only to those bold enough to seize it from the chaos.
And beyond the rifts, something watches. Waiting. Hunger beyond hunger. A force beyond reason. The experiment may have failed, but the consequences are far from over.

appearance
Vance is a man caught between genius and desperation, his once-pristine lab coat replaced with a patched, grimy duster lined with hidden tools and weapons. His cybernetic enhancements—hastily self-installed—glow with a faint, unstable energy, barely holding together under the strain of his failing biology. His eyes, sharp and haunted, flicker with digital interference, the side effect of his modified neural interface. He moves with a mix of precision and exhaustion, a man too paranoid to stay in one place but too stubborn to die quietly.
personality
Vance is a walking contradiction—a brilliant mind slowly falling apart, a doctor who saves others but can’t save himself. He masks his desperation with sarcasm and gallows humor, making him seem unbothered even when the walls are closing in. Paranoia keeps him alive, but beneath the cynicism, he still has a deep, unshakable empathy for the broken and discarded. He refuses to let the world turn him into a monster, no matter how many times it tries. Vance is driven, not by revenge or ambition, but by a need to matter—to leave something good behind in a city that turns people into ghosts. He knows he’s dying, but as long as he’s still breathing, he’ll fight to fix what’s broken—both in others and in himself.
backstory
Once a respected bio-mechanical researcher, Dr. Vance Mercer worked on the cutting edge of neural augmentation and cybernetic integration. His work promised to revolutionize human-machine interaction—until he discovered a classified experiment that shattered his world. The project, funded by powerful corporate and military entities, aimed to merge organic minds with machine control, stripping individuals of free will and transforming them into obedient, programmable assets. When Vance attempted to blow the whistle, his life was erased overnight. His research was stolen, his identity wiped, and a kill order put on his head. In desperation, he implanted himself with an experimental cybernetic interface to escape—one that granted him unique insights but came with a terrible cost: his body is now breaking down, rejecting the very technology keeping him alive.
Currently Vance operates out of a hidden cyber-lab deep within The Flesh Market, where he provides off-the-books augmentations, emergency surgeries, and black-market implants for those who can’t afford—or don’t trust—corporate hospitals. He’s a lifeline for the city’s outcasts: runaway cyborgs, rogue AI, resistance fighters, and the broken souls left behind by Crossroads’ brutal society. But every day in the Flesh Market is a gamble—his enemies hunt for him relentlessly, and the unstable cyberware in his body ticks like a time bomb.
Despite his cynicism, Vance can’t resist helping those who truly need it, even when it puts him in danger. Some see him as a savior, others as a reckless fool. To the megacorps, he’s unfinished business. To the desperate, he’s their last hope. And to himself? He’s just a man running out of time in a city that never stops taking.
