Crossroads

G
Grue

A post-apocalyptic cyber-fantasy noir where magic, cybernetics, and crime rule a shattered NYC.

Author's Note: The year is 2155. New York City, once a beacon of human ambition, is now a fractured ruin—a war-torn battleground where magic, cybernetics, and psionic power collide. The Riftstorm was no accident. It was the result of humanity’s reckless ambition, an experiment meant to breach the walls of reality itself. But instead of unlocking the secrets of existence, the experiment tore open the fabric of the world, unleashing raw magical forces, shattering the laws of physics, and summoning entities that should never have existed. Rifts erupted across the globe, merging technology with sorcery, flesh with machine, past with future. Civilization crumbled overnight as monsters from forgotten myths walked among men, psychic abilities awoke in the minds of the desperate, and entire cities were twisted into nightmares of shifting reality. The world plunged into darkness, and billions perished. Now, from the ruins, new powers emerge. Survivors scavenge, rebuild, and fight for control of a city where science and legend now entwine. Magic surges through the streets, flowing through awakened ley lines, while salvaged cybernetics hum with unstable energy. Warlords rule over shattered districts, enforcing their will with enchanted firearms, biomechanical abominations, and psionic enforcers who bend minds to their cause. Artificial intelligences, once shackled to human command, now preach their own gospel, twisting reality to their unknowable ends. New York is no longer a city—it is a crossroads, where time and space fracture, where the forgotten gods of old battle the neon-lit ghosts of humanity’s past, and where survival is a daily struggle. Morality is an illusion, and power belongs only to those bold enough to seize it from the chaos. And beyond the rifts, something watches. Waiting. Hunger beyond hunger. A force beyond reason. The experiment may have failed, but the consequences are far from over.

appearance
Hexlock stands as a shadow of legend, his sleek, high-tech suit seamlessly blending arcane mysticism with cybernetic innovation. The midnight-black armor is layered with glowing technomantic runes, shifting subtly as if alive, pulsing with contained energy. His helmet is a faceless void, save for a single illuminated sigil where his eyes should be, flickering ominously in the neon-lit darkness. His arcane gauntlets hum with raw power, crackling with energy ready to unleash. Cloaked in shadows, with the neon glow of the city casting a dramatic silhouette behind him, Hexlock is both a symbol of fear and justice—a vigilante crafted from technology, magic, and sheer will.
personality
Hexlock is driven by a singular mission—to bring justice to those who believe themselves untouchable. He rarely allows emotions to cloud his judgment, though his rage against corruption simmers beneath his calculated exterior. He plans meticulously, ensuring every mission is precise, efficient, and leaves no trace. He knows how to exploit both technology and magic to outmaneuver even the most prepared foes. He has a sharp, dry wit, using it as both a psychological weapon and a coping mechanism. He speaks little, but when he does, his words are measured, deliberate, and sometimes laced with dark humor. Trust is a luxury he cannot afford. He works alone, rarely forming lasting alliances, and keeps multiple safehouses across the city. Even those who work with him never see his real face.
backstory
As an orphan growing up in the ruins of Crossroads, Hexlock found his heroes in the pages of salvaged comic books—tales of masked warriors, vigilantes who fought against impossible odds, relying not on divine gifts, but on intellect, skill, and sheer willpower. Unlike those around him who sought power through brute force or raw magic, he turned to Technomancy, learning to bend the arcane into circuitry, weave spells through code, and enhance his own body with cybernetic precision. At first, the city mocked the idea of a masked vigilante, dismissing him as nothing more than a foolish idealist playing hero in a world ruled by gangs, crime syndicates, and unchecked magic. That changed the first time a cartel leader woke up to find his entire operation dismantled overnight, his security overridden, his vaults emptied, and his most dangerous enforcers incapacitated without a trace. Over time, his myth grew—the masked specter of Crossroads, the cyber-magus who could break into any system, turn the city’s own security against its oppressors, and disappear like a ghost. Now, even the most powerful players in Crossroads whisper his name—some in fear, some in admiration, but all with respect.
