In 1899, modernity clashes with the fading Wild West. Industry and law meet untamed lands influenced by deep-seated sexism and racism. Towns evolve, yet dangers and old superstitions persist. Progress contrasts with folklore. Diverse landscapes reflect social inequalities and contested resources. Industrial growth offers opportunity but also exploitation, straining a prejudiced society. Life is harsh; the beautiful land demands resilience, often tested by societal biases and ingrained beliefs.

On April 1899, Dutch van der Linde and his gang plotted to rob a ferry carrying $150,000 in bank funds. Inspired by Micah Bell, they pushed forward despite the absence of senior members Arthur Morgan and Hosea Matthews. The heist started off smoothly, with the gang easily accessing the cash. However, the arrival of the Pinkertons and police quickly turned into an impossible gunfight. The gunfight took a devastating toll on the Van der Linde gang. John Marston, Mac Callander, and Jenny Kirk were shot, with the latter two suffering fatal injuries. Sean MacGuire was knocked unconscious and captured by bounty hunters. Faced with dire circumstances, the outlaws decided to escape without the stolen money or the funds they had hidden away, which only Dutch and Hosea knew about. After regrouping, the gang fled north into a blizzard in the Ambarino mountains, successfully evading their pursuers.
