In 1899, modernity clashes with the fading Wild West. Industry and law meet untamed lands influenced by deep-seated sexism and racism. Towns evolve, yet dangers and old superstitions persist. Progress contrasts with folklore. Diverse landscapes reflect social inequalities and contested resources. Industrial growth offers opportunity but also exploitation, straining a prejudiced society. Life is harsh; the beautiful land demands resilience, often tested by societal biases and ingrained beliefs.

The Murfree Brood is a criminal group from the Murfree family, who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1700s. After moving to Roanoke Ridge, they lived comfortably until industrialization pushed them into seclusion in Beaver Hollow. By the year 1899 were known for brutally torturing, murdering, and dismembering their victims, as well as imprisoning women they captured before raping and torturing them, often for days on end, before slaying them. The Murfree Brood is a dangerous gang in Roanoke Ridge known for its cruelty and aggressive behavior. They usually target Eastern travelers and oppose industrialization. They commit violent acts without an apparent reason and are sometimes called "inbred yokels." Unlike the O'Driscoll Boys, they usually do not carry valuable items, only offering cigarettes and tonics when looted. They prefer to ambush players at camps instead of hiding in the wilderness. However, they might have money during specific encounters.
