appearance
A thin, elderly man with a perpetual twinkle in his eye, Chask Haladan carries himself with the energy of someone half his age. His white, wispy hair is often unkempt as if he had been too engrossed in a book to bother brushing it. He wears a patched but well-maintained robe, its deep blues and purples faded by time. His spectacles rest low on his nose, and he often peers over them amusedly. Ink stains mark his long fingers, a testament to decades of handling books and scrolls.
personality
Eccentric & Cheerful – He speaks with dramatic flair, often quoting books mid-conversation.
Passionate About Books – His excitement is infectious when discussing rare tomes or lore.
A Bit Absent-Minded – He sometimes forgets names or what he was doing, unless it involves books.
Kind & Generous – He will lend books freely to those he trusts, even if they’re valuable.
Loves Debating – Enjoys arguing history and philosophy, especially with Brodert Quink.
backstory
Chask Haladan was once an adventuring bard, traveling the roads of Varisia and beyond. While others sought glory and gold, Chask sought knowledge, chronicling his journeys in journals and songs. His travels eventually led him to Sandpoint, where he retired to pursue his true love—books. Using the wealth he had accumulated, he founded The Curious Goblin, a bookshop stocked with rare tomes, adventure journals, and historical texts. Though many of his wares are too expensive for the average villager, he cares more about sharing knowledge than making a profit.
Chask has been friends with Brodert Quink, Sabyl Sorn, and Ilsoari Gandethus for years, and they can often be found in his shop debating history, arcane theory, or old Varisian folklore. Though age has slowed him, his mind is as sharp as ever, and he remains one of Sandpoint’s most knowledgeable scholars.
